well if it's the drive, getting new games will only break the games. you can't fix the scratches, only prevent new ones from happening. If the problem is that your DVD drive is dying, then getting a new PS2 will fix these problems...but that's expensive. If it is the drive, see if you can get a new one or repair the one you've got.

Ummmmm.....crap....
Well here it goes. I just started working at a video store and we get video games for free there, but everytime I rent a game the game suddenly stops when it has to load something mid-level. Now I poped in some of my older games I bought like Prince of Persia 3 and Indigo Prophecy and they work perfect. I also got the rentals cleaned at the store so there perfect!. I play a few DVD's on my PS2 and I heard that can wear it out.
Im sort of baffeled and angry. How can I fix this without buying a new one. Im pretty much broke.

1) Try to make your PS2 stand vertically, it may temporarily solve the problem
2) Get a lens cleaner, which may work in the short run, i know its worked for one of my friends and theirs is running super smooth still. I've read that it can screw up the lens tho. Another friend just simply took the top cover of his ps2 off n using an extremely soft gentle cloth cleaned the dust buildup around the lens.

Iv pretty much tryed everything now.
I stood it vertical...nothing.
Took it apart for the first time and cleaned everything...nothing.
Played other games and tryed to trick it...nothing.
Then I got bored and watched Invader Zim and looked at my MGS 3 disc as it danced around and laughted in my face.
I also noticed this sort of ringing when the problem happens.
All the cut scence's work on the other games. I think the gods just hate me....

I believe then it is a sign that your PS2 needs to be put to rest, or as a backup machine to watever it can do if it can do anythin at all.
Sorry to hear bout that. Although a bit of good news is that the slim PS2 is pretty damn cheap these days...i bought one for myself 3 weeks ago.
My friends ask me what the hell and why? My answer? Just cuz i could :P

all playstations in general are a joke... i love sony and all... but i would greatly appreciate it if they just got out of the console gaming business right now
(my little bro bought a PS1 and a PS2 even though i wouldnt be caught dead spending a cent on any playstation)
we have sooo many problems with our PS1 and PS2 they are horribly designed and horribly made and performance wise they are behind the times (compared to other same gen consoles)
i still am thoroughly shocked that sony was able to sell even ONE original Playstation console.... dont even get me started on all the flaws and downsides of that thing
my reccomendation is to sell your PS2 and go get some new computer parts or a nintendo console... hell even a microsoft console would be better!!!
yeah thats right... i went there

The worm gear, the most problematic cause of disc drive problems in the original PS1, was double sided. Many problems with it were fixed by simply putting the disc in, turning it up side down, then running it.
