PS2 DVD-Drive Problem

My PS2 was verticle and it got knocked onto its top and ever since then I've had problems with it. I tryed opening up the case to see if anythin was wrong with it but nothing seemed wrong. The problem is, is that when I play SOCOM II some multiplayer maps won't load, the screen just stays black and i hear the disk spinning then I hear a loud click sound, and the click sounds like the actual disk hits something because after the click the disk slowly starts spinning up and then it clicks again, sometimes it will click 3 or 4 times very close to each other. I only have this problem with SOCOM II but i know its not the disk, also when the PS2 fell over SOCOM II was in it.

The sounds you are hearing is the reader trying to find the track it's looking for. You could try running a dvd cleaner through it.

It sounds like you might have knocked the read head off a tad.

Your problem may only show on this particular software disk because it has more data on it than most.

There may be something causing a blockage at the extreme limit of the head's travel.

I could get a replacement, I really can't live with it, its annoying when your playing an online game and when it goes to load into a level it just freezes and clicks. Its interesting though that this small tip over would damage the reader yet my ps2 fell from about 2 1/2 feet high and laanded on tile on its front which destroyed my mem card and jammed my dvd tray and I had to open the case up and pop the tray loose but my reader was fine.

Wow, good work finding the old related post.

If you can get to the top level (where you can select what to load) and the disk if present and detected appears (from memory) as an orange disk. Then that means the PS2 itself is working, but the player side is not.

If you can hear the disk spinning up for a while and then stopping then the player is trying to work but cannot read the disk, so try getting a DVD cleaner to clean the lens on the player as they do get dirty.

If you can't get to that top menu on the screen or the disk is not spnning at all then there is a more serious problem than a dirty lens or faulty sensor.

The most common reason for disc read errors in a PS2 is lens alignment. Play with the laser azimuth gears until you get a good read. There are guides out there for this - I have even posted some in my past ps2 threads.
