The PS2 used an emulator to play PS1 games. Windows XP uses an emulator to play DOS/Win95/Win98/WinNT games. The PS3 uses a (very crappy) emulator to play PS2 and PS1 games. Emulators are required since it's different hardware and operating systems. So where's your point?

thats because your not putting an NES cartrage in the wii. Your playing games that have been updated to work with the wii's hardware and OS. Microsoft is doing the same thing for Xbox360, slowly adding more titles that will work. It was alot easier for Nintendo since I'm sure every NES game uses the same emulator, every N64 game, the same emulator, etc. For Xbox, each game, since it's so complex, needs to be checked individually to work with their emulator, and made compatible before they release the update. I'm not like ripping apart Nintendo's 100% back-compatibility claim, I think it's great, but I'm just saying, it's different.

I wasn't talking about the virtual console. You can flawlessly play any gamecube game without problems or updates in your wii

my point was the irons of what are effectively PC games (come on, the Xbox was more of a PC than anything else ever) being run on a console for once .
and origionaly the PS2 didn't use emulation, it had a PS1 integrated into it. and the PS3 is doing the same again with the PS2 chips . (at least this far... i know later versions of the PS2 )
and AFAIK Wii Virtual Console games are re-encoded to run on Wii hardware, but are still run through an emulator too. but gamecube games run flawlessly (because Wii uses effectivley the same architecture as GC, but with some new GDDR3 external memory, and integration of the main T1-SRAM on-die with Hollywood)

i hope ps2 games are emulated on the ps3. have you seen the comparison video? the ps3 runs ps2 games horribly. All jagged lines, and poor contrast. the ps2 makes ps2 games look 10x better then the ps3 does.

it's kind of odd.
it contains the emotion engine and the CPU (whatever that was) from the PS2. but then it seems to convert that into PS3 language for storage in memory, and displaying it.
and from what I've seen/read, you're right Drumz. however they do it, they do it poorly.
you'd think with ALL that processing power their proclaim to have, they'd be able to have a half-way-decent emulator running from the HDD and mimiking a PS2 exactly.

That may be true, but i rather play on my old Gamecube then to fuck up my hands trying to grip that block of plastic without dropping it. Wii (and WiiU) has one of the most annoying controllers in f-ing history.
