Differences between PS3 80 and 40 Gb?

Hello,

I know that, besides the storage capacity, 40 Gb version has 2 usb ports (4 in the 80Gb) and no card reader.

Are those 2 extra usb ports very important? Under what circumstances would you use more than 2 ports?

What about the card reader? Is it better (do you see a higher definition/ better picture or movie - mpg's... ) than an external card reader included in/or used with your computer?

I was thinking about buying an 80 or 40 Gb PS3 which I would use MAINLY to play standard definition (non blue ray) DVD's. Will these SD DVD`s benefit from upscaling - can you really see the difference?

For the above mentioned use, would there be any difference in performance between the 80 and 40 Gb versions?

Thanks.

No I have not seen a difference between my DVD player running with component cables and my PS3 running with component cables. the PS3 was upscaling my DVD's to 1080i. you'd want to get the 80gb version if you want to play PS2 games or you want to run linux, have lots of files on it.

but besides that there are no difference in performance.

I've always found the PS3 to do a very good job of upscaling DVD's or anything.

However, the upscaler is a constant among SKU's, as far as I'm aware - the only difference in the two models is the hard drive size, and this will have no effect on standard DVD's.

[Edit] Merged your threads - sorry for any confusion.

Biggest difference is the hard drive size yes, but the backwards compatability only found in the 80gb model is also a rather large difference. If you have ps2 games lying around the 80gb is your best bet, then you can sell of your ps2 or do whatever with it.

Mages kind of mentioned it in his post too, Sony has just been really weird about backwards compatability... well with the ps3 that is. Microsoft right from the beginning said it wouldn't be fully supported and people got used to that but sony started having it in every console I believe, then they changed how they allowed the ps3 to play ps2 games (It went from more a hardware solution to software) and then they decide to totally remove it in the cheaper model.
