as mphill pointed out earlier, you're really best off using the two devices separately.
Now if you have control over the kind of barcodes used, then you could consider using like Data Matrix codes or QR codes which are meant to be read / scanned by low quality cameras, such as the ones found in cell phones.

Software issue
What i need it is probably software. I have barcode database and I need attaché picture of item to each record. The right way to do so have a barcode scanner and picture frame on computer to take a picture after scan. It is 2 separate hardware. Scanner for read barcode and camera for taking picture. Software should save picture on hard drive with file name matching barcode.

I have just been hired to write a program that will examine images captured with a digital camera that the company owns and update their product database with the image name. The camera they have is a Digital camera that was ordered with a optional feature that allows the camera to scan a barcode and then imbed the barcode data in the image meta tags. The company has over 60,000 SKU's to take pictures of and didn't want to be have to be connected to a computer when they take the pictures. I saw the camera but didn't get the brand or model number. The camera is in a shock resistant case and I imagine it was quite expensive. I will port the brand and model number once I get them. |

I found the camera. It is the Ricoh 500SE. Here is some info from an online review.

Allowing many digital images to one reference barcode
I have read about the Ricoh 500SE and the various attachments and not sure if it will give me what I am after, though I believe it is ideal for a one to one relation between the image and the unique barcode (ubc).
I hope someone can help with my challenge. I want to scan a barcode followed by one or more photos associated to it. The uniqueness of the photo will be the date time stamp and the picture sequence number, but I can group them by the ubc. Has anyone had experience of this such that the barcode capture and then photos end up on a usable database that I can manipulate? Any ideas of what software is out there to help with this? |

That's exactly what the Ricoh 500SE with the barcode scanner can be used for. When you scan a barcode with the camera then the following pictures that you take will have the value of the barcode embedded in the image meta data. You would that have to use a program that can access the images meta data to update a database with the barcode value and images names. I don't know of an off the shelf program to do this but one can be written using the Microsoft visual studio express software that is available from Microsoft. |

Pro Camera w/scanner
There is a Pro camera out there that allows you to scan barcodes. The Fuji F5 (Street $2,000).
You cana attach a barcode scanner to the camera, and the camera will store the barcode data in the EXIF data (on the comments). BH photo video sells a complete kit for the F5: just google the following: fuji s5 barcode reader The scanner is connected directly to the camera, and the photos stored in the CF card. There is a shareware that allows you to rename the file according to the barcode data stored in the comments section of the EXIF data. Read the reviews from fuji. The functionalities providede are awesome. I shoot tethered to a laptop that has the barcodes database. I scan on the scanner, and store the photos on my hard drive and they are automatically rnamed to the barcode data, but I paid $18,000 for the software license! I just found out about the F5 a few days ago, and am seriously planning on changing! Hope it helps! Hope it helps |

Solution for Canon Cameras
I created a system like this. We scan a barcode to take a picture automatically and set the name to the barcode. The white background is automatically cropped out and the image is uploaded to flickr in the background.
Here is how I did it. Breeze systems (breezesys dot com) sells a program, DSLR Remote Pro, that controls Canon cameras for about $100. It allows a perl script to trigger the camera passing several variables, including the image name. Perl then has and imagemagic module to do any editing you need and I use the flickr module for perl to upload it. I just open the perl scrip in a command prompt on windows and scan away. If you need multiple pictures, you could scan multiple times or, I believe you can set it to retain the image name until you change it. I wrote the perl script but based on a sample that is included with Breeze software. |
