This is a step by step guide to prepping your motherboard/Pot and what you need for Dry Ice benching. I have obtained info. from various forums and guides. There are quite a few alternatives and methods to preparing your mobo. This is what worked for me.
I used the following materials that I picked up from local hardware stores and/or "Super stores". Duct Installation Clear Nail Polish Q-tips Heavy duty Shop rags Thermal Paste Acetone Isopropyl Alcohol For this guide I will be using a Asus P5W DH Deluxe Motherboard Make sure that you clean you CPU with Isopropyl Alcohol and Q-tips to remove any left over thermal paste, finger prints, dust etc.... You then need to take the nail polish and apply it to all surface mount components all around the socket area,on the top and bottom of your motherboard. This will help create a seal that will prevent any aiir from getting into the socket while you are benching. Now some benchers do not use this method but I did and it really does help. Remember condensation is your enemy! ![]() I applied the polish to the entire area with in the four socket holes and about a 1/2 inch outside of them. After I applied the polish I removed a piece of foil from the duct installation and used it as a template for the shape of the gaskets that I am going to use around the socket. After that, use the template to cut out two pieces of duct installation. Next you need to cut out a hole the size of the socket itself. Remember that this stuff can stretch a little bit and I found it is better to have it just a tiny bit smaller than the socket(just a little bit) in order to ensure a snug fit when you install it. You are trying to keep every bit of water out possible. When you have both gaskets cut just right, pull off the foil on both gaskets and each will have one sticky side. Apply one to the other and the next one to the motherboard. You will need a tool such as a small screw driver to push the installation around the socket and the surrounding components.When you get done it should look something like this. Do the same for the bottom of the motherboard. Now is a good time to put together your hold down bracket and punch the holes through the socket. The next step is also considered an alternative, but I would highly suggest it as for the very reason that it was suggested I experienced it when taking apart my mobo after a benching session. Take two shop towels and use the template from earlier making two gaskets. Place these on top. When I removed my pot I realized that there was condensation and these two little towels had saved it from reaching the CPU.(Thanks Vince!! ) Next, you will need to make the main foam gasket that will surround your socket. Using neoprene foam insulation you will cut out a hole for the socket. Make sure that it does not exceed the the size of the socket as you are trying to minimize any air that that can get through. ![]() Last edited by Brian y. : March 1st, 2007 at 09:40 PM. |

Now you need to get your Pot and cut out a piece of neoprene insulation for the bottom part. under the cpu hold down bracket. You want to cut a little long so that when you tighten down you will compress the insulation to help keep a tight seal.
Now apply thermal paste. I used AS%. Some use ceramic, others liquid metal and some use none at all. Place top of insulation on and your done! ![]() A couple of thing I would recommend: I have read alot about cold bugs and some of the best benchers in the world say that it is always good to add a small amount of Dice at first and to boot up to make sure that everything is fine and that if you do not boot up you can eliminate the "cold bug". Also it is a good idea to keep the acetone in the freezer for at least 24 hours prior to using it. Remember that when you add the acetone that only a half a shot glass is really needed as it is there to help spread the temp. more evenly in the pot as it will stay in a liquid form up to -99 degrees Celsius.(Dice is around -78.5 degrees Celsius) Too much and you can cause a "volcano reaction" that will end up killing your board. i remember some guys masking cpu socket & then spray painting the mobo around the cpu!!! that way any coondensation wont get to touch anything!
other guys used vaseline to insulate the mobo & then put the insulation on top of that. it forms an airtight seal between the mobo & the insulation. vaseline is messy but i'd rather do that than spray paint! the foil scares me a little..... we need more guys doing this sort of thing, so this guide is awesome |
