Timeline Question
This may be silly....I just installed the program to start folding and it downloaded the first WU and it says it will take until 23 February of 2008 to complete a single WU!!! Is this right? This computer might not even be around that long. Did I do something wrong or is the program glitched or what?

DL'ed FahMon and I can't figure out how the hell to make it work. I know what you're "supposed" to do but that doesn't seem to work. Anyone have a quick "how to" for it?
As for specs, it's an AMD Athlon 64 4000+ (single core San Diego) running with 2GB DDR400 memory. |

With some more fiddling around (and a knock to the head for common sense) I got it to monitor the current project. It says it has a deadline of April 23rd with a preferred deadline of March 18th. But, that's all the info it gives...no projected time of completion. Anybody?

You have to let it monitor for a little while. It keeps track of the time it takes to complete each frame of the WU, and from that data projects an estimated time of completion and average points per day for that given WU.
With that computer though, deadlines should absolutely not be an issue. Oh, and by the way - thanks for folding! |

it bases the time of completion on how long it's taken to complete what it's done.
So if, for example, yu run a unit while doing tasks that require the CPU, like burning CDs playing games, etc. then it will give you a high time because it took a long time to complete the first bit. Let it run for awhile as arch said and it'll give you a better time of completion. Or you could do like I used to do and calculate it yourself. |

Cool, thanks for the info. Are there any ways to increase the speed at which this sucker runs? I've got it set to making the folding program the highest priority and it is using close to 100% of the CPU cycles but I can still run any program I want and nothing has slowed down. Guess it could be that the system is just that good. Dunno. Just seems like if it's not slowing down my playing that it could run faster.

Ok, set it to lowest priority. Should I let it use 100% of cycles? What was the problem when making it high priority? Also, I DL'ed the graphical version not knowing there was another version. Should I uninstall and DL the non-graphics version? Is it that much better?

Yes, the non-graphical client is better. And you should leave it at it's original setting, it'll work fine at what it's originally set to.
The problem with making it run high priority is that the folding client uses 100% of the unused CPU. When you make it go higher priority, windows gives it more of the CPU then programs that are lower priority, like (for example), windows itself. That's good if you're going to fold over a long period of time and want 100% because you won't be using the computer (although in that situation I'd recommend other OSes) |

Well everything seems to be running smoothly so far. I decided to install the non-graphic version on my daughter's computer and it won't DL the files to "fold". Thought it was maybe just her computer and tried it on mine. No luck.
So, I just deleted those and installed the graphic version on hers instead. So, two computers down, two more to go. I figured what the hell...I'll have 4 computers runnin it if I can. Can't hurt and I'll only have it running during screensaver mode on theirs so they won't be bothered by it. |
