Overclocking for Newbies

Our very own DMOS has written a very good guide on how to overclock your P4 800fsb CPU and it's worth the read if you're new to the overclocking scene:

http://www.devhardware.com/c/a/Hard...Your-P4-800FSB/

Also for the few lonely AMD users out there who are looking to overclock their Athlon XP's, check out this guide from Madshrimps:

[EDIT]Link fixed. Don't forget to check out Ultimate Overclocking & Stability Testing by madhyena. edited by Nilpo[/EDIT]

Hey Sov what can you get your level II Mushkin up too. I have 1 gig and about the highest I can get to pass memtest is 227 fsb no matter what timings or voltage. I even did the volt mod on my asus p4c800 and took it up to 3.2 volts and couldn't get any higher than 227 2-3-2-6-1. I can run those timings on 2.85 in the bios.

Mine went up to 233ish 2-2-2-6 w/ 3v (2.9 in bios on nf7). 256mb sticks o/c better than 512mb, but you shouldnt be hitting a wall at 227. You sure it's not your cpu crapping out on you?

Positive its not the Cpu. My NF7 i couldn't get my system stable over 215 FSB but I just bought a 2.6C with an P4C800 mobo. I am getting a 2.4 sl6z3 soon hopefully its a good one. I can take the cpu up to about 260fsb prime stable but can't get the memory to pass memtest over night over 227-8. It can make a couple of passes at 230-232 but usually has an error about every 5th or 6th pass on memtest.

My KHX...My old NF7-S wouldn't go over 215 either without some serious modding..eventually got it too 11x233 24/7 ......well most days anyway.

I just got my nf7 back from an rma. what mods did you have to do to get it up higher. I am hoping to get around 225 or so. was it the chipset mod. My last posts were before my ram was burned in and can now run stable at what my sig says with 3.05vdimm

Hey people I am new here and I need help.
I just got p4 3.2, 1 gig ram (3200) and asus p4p800 mobo.
I did run a 3dmark and I got 16000 point. Sad ha?
Ok I want to overclock my cpu and ram but I have no clue how to do this. I read this article but I can’t understand anything. Timing and all that is a black magic to me.
Can you people help me to speed up my comp.

Go into your bios and raise the fsb. Go to 220 that should give you a start. What type of ram do you have. If it is good then you will be able to run it in 1:1 at low timings. You will need to raise the vdimm to the max 2.85. There is a whole article on overclocking your p4 with detailed descriptions on this website. I would read that and you should be able to get yourself a faster system.
