E7500 FSB question
Just put together a low cost, low power use, quiet system.
First new computer in about 5 years for a variety of reasons.
System is
MSI P43-C51 MoBo
Intel E7500
G. Skill Eco 1.35v DDR3 1600 CL7-8-7-24 2x2gb
Powercolor Go Green 5570
Samsung F2 500gb
Corsair 400w 80 plus PSU
Background is that I am not a huge power user, as you might guess (just upgraded from an ancient P4 2.53). Finally got feed up with not being able to play any game from the last 4 or 5 years. Mostly just needed the ability to play Total War recent games (don't do a whole lot of PC gaming otherwise).
The DDR1600 memory was semi-future proofing as I am thinking in a year or two (probably two) of getting a Q9550s quad core, and the 333mhz fsb would mean 1600 memory. Plans for this year/Christmas are an OCZ 30/60gb SSD and Windows 7 (still using XP).
Now my thought/question is this. I don't really care about much of an overclock, but I do use Photoshop quite a bit for my photography. I was thinking of increasing the FSB to 300mhz and reducing the clock multiplier to 10x from 11x to get a CPU speed of 3ghz up a hair from 2.93, but a FSB of 300mhz and a memory speed of 1333mhz (and I could run the memory at a lower latency at that speed as well, even if it doesn't have the through put of 1600).
My goal is to increase overall system performance while not impacting thermal output or power use, or at least minimally impact it.
Would this accomplish that? Or would the increase in FSB/Memory speed still increase thermal output and power use a fair amount, even though the CPU speed is almost the same as before?

In this case only the memory controller and RAM would make a bit more heat (but barely any more), so you would get more performance almost for free with regards to power. But, to be honest, with such a small jump in just FSB and memory frequency I don't think you'll see much benefit from it, maybe an extra 5%? Why not go for 333*9, or even use the memory to it's stock potential and go for 400*7 or 8? Power consumption only massively increases when the voltage is taken up, and I would think your CPU would quite happily do 3.2GHz on stock volts, if not very close to it.
So basically, you can do it but you won't get much back from it over stock. If I were you I'd go a bit further and make it worthwhile..
Also, running the memory more than 4 times the FSB only helps general memory latency, you don't get a whole lot of performance from it. I personally like to keep the memory running 1:1 with the FSB and clock the FSB up as high as it will go, but no doubt some people swear by clocking the memory as high as it'll go too.. Maybe they'll chime in

Thanks for the info. I'll start playing with benchmarking and overclocking this weekend. I'll probably stay on the conservative side of things though as I am not running any particularly powerful apps right now (Medieval Total War 2 is the heaviest on the video game side of things and most of what I do in photoshop the new system can handle just dandily).
