Watching HD on 30" or 24" do they support it ?

I'm on the market now for a new LCD for my thinkpad T61p.
i started looking on Dell 30" and HP. they are expensive but i thought , ok if i can watch HDTV on them . then i can justify the cost.
but after reading about them , seems they don't support HD resolution. am i wrong on that ? Is it possible to watch HD on them without "stretching" with the video card?
i don't mind black strips if they are not too large .

now for the second part of the question, 24" are much cheaper . Dell is $370 now. do they support HD picture ?

thanks Dan
