Question Monitor Stuck in Standby

Hello,

Yesterday I went to turn on computer but the monitor plug was not fully plugged in, which I did not notice at the time. When the switch on plug was turned on, a spark came from the plug. Now the monitor screen remains black when computer turned on.

The actual computer is working, from my memory I can use mouse and keyboard to log into windows and audio still working, just the monitor screen is blank, altghough there is power going through.

The LED light flicks from green to orange when turned on.

The monitor is only about 2 years old, but is one of those big chunky heavy ones.

I don't know where to begin on fixing this.

Do I need a new monitor?
Can it simply be repaired?
Or has one of the cards in computer damaged during spark from plug?

I am student so money very limited but also needing to use computer essential.

If I just knew exactly what problem is I can then get around to finding money to fix it.

Thank you very much in advance.

are you sure it's the monitor that's not working? try plugging the monitor into another computer just to make sure it's the monitor.

does the computer have onboard video or a separate video card? if it's a separate video card, try replacing it with another. if it's onboard, buy a pci-x16/agp video card.

If you cannot borrow a video card to try an se if it had failed, there is one more simple test that you should do, have you powered down the computer and restarted it since you confirmed the the monitor works and is the cable the same one you checked the monitor with (so you know monitor and video cable works)?

Might seem basic but needs to be done to eliminate things.

The fact the indicator goes from green to orange usually indicates it has powered up and has switched to standby, because there is no video arriving at the monitor.

The spark you mentioned is a normal things when there is a bad power connection arcing will occur. This does not normally cause damage to things as it is contained to the AC power, the fact the monitor still works supports that also.

I took computer into a computer shop today, as my brother is friends with one of the guys who works there.

Well, he plugged in the monitor and started up computer, and windows came on screen!

No idea what happened, it wasn't working for me. I took it home and it really is working again.

I shall go laugh and die now.

What can be the theory behind to what happened? I didn't replace any of the cards or anything.

Very strange.

Glad my suspicion was correct and it was not faulty. Did you do a full shutdown and restart of the pc when you where trying to see what was wrong, the graphics card may have just got a glitch that needed a proper reset to sort it out.

Yes! I did that many times and nothing happened. Which is why I am so confused how it would suddenly start to work again, seemingly random.

Hopefully it doesn't happen again.

Thank you both for your advice...
