its not the resolution that takes time. its the refresh rate. the standard LCD is like 25ms. Im not sure what CRT would be off hand. But it is considerably faster.

LCD i would have thought is the gamer's choice, just wait for hey to post and he'll give you all the pros and cons as he has both!
I myself would go for a CRT based on pricing. Because saving on the monitor i could then buy more components to get an even better gaming experience!

a higher resolution preferably, and a decent hz, - best choice is a 19" crt, tft and lcd, arent very clear in my opinion and they break too fast, plus a 19" tft = £400 19" crt = £120... and the crt has better reolution and hz

Abnormal - get your terms right. An LCD monitor is rated using a RESPONSE TIME. That is the time it takes one pixel to rise and fall, measured in milliseconds. I have a 17" LCD rated with a 16ms respone time. It was tested once and came back with a 13ms rise time and a 4 ms fall time, which is actually 17ms. A crt monitor uses a refresh rate, much like a TV, rated in Hz. i.e. 60Hz, which is how fast the monitor can cycle the picture.

what it means is that the crt has no motion blur because its refresh rate is far superior. but if you get a lcd with a 12ms reply rate, its nearly impossable to tell the differance, an lcd also does'nt have glare and its brighter, overall it looks nicer then a crt except when things start to move

Thats right pecan, but a crt can be protected with a £12 anti glare filter....okay it looks well ugly but it does the job.
Heat production of the CRT? Cant argue, very true, though i do have a very efficient Mitsubishi one with TFT flatscreen but CRT, but still, doubt it would match a LCD
But where the real contest comes up is where you ammount all of that to £.
Okay even taking into account the heat production (meaning more electricity) glare filter it still comes out cheaper than the LCD.
I dont think the LCD is doing itself justice, if it was cheaper then i wudn't fault it, but thats the point, its not!

CRT all the way right now bro-got a 19" viewsonic G90fb last year for a little over 200USD, and I couldn't be happier. The only reason to spend the extra bucks for a flat screen is really if space is an issue. Can't say enough good things about the Viewsonic performance and looks. These are the monitors that went for like 600USD a few years back. Prices dropping like crazy cause the LCD's are pushing them out.

yeh, lcd's are amazingly overpriced. but still if you can afford 1 with a decent pixle reply rate their colors are a bit more vibrant and you dont break your backs at lan partys

All I really use my main system for is gaming. I also use a 15" LCD. Whether its Far Cry or Starcraft, I prefer LCD. Why? Much easier on my eyes (I wear glasses), less glare, and most importantly, less radiation.
I also have 2 other computers set up with LCDs in my home; my wife's 17" LCD, our kitchen system with 14" :CD, my teamspeak/music box with a little 14" crt, and my test-rig set up- a 17" crt.
I just prefer LCDs as I spend most of my day driving, going to customer's homes, and working on TVs (though not much anymore- I'm specializing in Exercise Equipment for now) and other Home Electronics.
The only time I've seen any really noticeable ghosting on LCDs is on screens over 17"- my 14" monitor in the kitchen actually games extremely well; many newer units now kick major butt. Plus LCDs have a smaller footprint, use MUCH less power, and generate FAR LESS heat.
Anyway, just thought I'd share my experiences.
Oh, BTW, I paid $180 for my 15" LCD- its a Viewsonic VA250. My 17" AOC and 14" Samsung CRTs were free- given to me by customers

hey gets stuff free all the time, he's far to annoying, basically he's a superman, well specialises in electronics and fixing them...a handyman.
So he fixes people's stuff and sometimes he asks if he can pay to take some of their old pc stuff and most of the time they give it to him.
Also some people just give him stuff as a 'token' and perhaps to reduce the price of the repairs.
...Yes hey, ive been spying on you!

polohunter05- that's what i was getting at. either way, 25ms RESPONSE TIME is not going to be very good for gaming.

Being Mrs Hey, I'm learning from him daily! One thing I do know is, you have to figure out what you can afford to get & then research your choices for that amount of money. I'm sure there are some great pawn shops in upstate NY...check out those places...see what they have in terms of monitors. You also have to take in consideration the amount of space you have (LCD vs CRT). Just do the research & go with it! That's my thoughts on the subject, anyway!
And yes, it's pretty cool being Mrs. Hey...I never know what hey will bring home next...like the Volvo wagon!!!!! w00t!!!!!!!

IThis doesn't really apply to the thread topic, but as far as getting free stuff: I've been given all types of free thigns from customer who wanted to tip me, but I refuse. I'll sometimes 'offer' to buy old computer stuff after refusing a tip, and several times people have unloaded a buncha stuff on me.
Not too mention I normally have a very good rapport with customers-= other tech get bugged when the customer is watching. I actually encourage it and try to get them to ask questions- this relays a sense of trust, and often is what ensures I don't get called back for little issues.
I won't even talk about the car situation: I'll let my wife do that
Anyway, I play all my game with an LCD, inlcuding Far Cry and Halo, 2 of the more demanding games out there- with no issues. It really dpends on the space you want/have/need, your $$$ situation, and how close to your screen you sit. Remember this- even a glare reduction screen will NOT remove radiation.
