HDMI to TV not Working

I have a Jetway Minitop that I have hooked up to my 26"tv via DVI to VGA. I would like to switch it over to HDMI to utilize the Sound over HDMI. When i switch to HDMI the TV tries to display in 1080P when it's only capable of displaying in 720p, it does display a image in the center of the screen but I can't see the pointer arrow no matter what I do. The system has Windows Vista Home Premium install and is only used as a HTPC. Has anyone had a similar prob or advise for correcting this. This is the first time I have worked with HDMI so it might be a simple fix that is eluding me.
