Frequency Out of Range (?!)
Hello. I have been facing a problem with my monitor, and I just have no idea how to fix it.
I got a 17-inch ProView monitor, working with an nVidia GeForce FX 5200 under Windows XP. I work with the following settings:
Resolution: 1152 by 864 pixels
Color Quality: Highest (32 bit)
Screen Refresh Rate: 75 Hertz
DPI Setting: Normal size (96 DPI)
I am very fond of gaming, so I have emulators here, like ZNes and Final Burn. When I tried playing Street Fighter with Final Burn a while ago, my monitor went all black, and a message appeared (not a Windows pop-up window. It was really a monitor message) that read "Frequency Out of Range - Try Other Resolutions". Confused, I changed the Screen Refresh Rate to 60 Hertz, and it worked just fine.
Now, though, I have Need for Speed Underground - I just installed it -, but can't play, because whenever I run the game, all I get is the same old message I had gotten a month ago:
-----------------------
93.7 KHz - 74.9 KHz
Frequency Out of Range
Try Other Resolutions
-----------------------
I came back to Windows and changed to other Screen Resolutions (1088 x 612, 1024 x 768 and even 800 x 600), as well as other Screen Refresh Rate values (60, 70, 72 Hertz). I changed the Color Quality, the DPI settings... nothing worked.
What should I do? I will gladly accept any suggestions!

Been there, done that
Hehe I just had that problem pop up playing a game yeasterday. The problem here is suprisingly enough your driver settings. The refresh rate for your monitor is probably limited to 60hz at such a high (haha) screen resolution; one of my monitors is a 5 year old POS and has the same problem. Solution: Go and change your Refresh Rate Overrides. To get right click on your desktop, click properties, go to the settings tab, click Advanced, then click the "Nvida 5200" tab. Under Direct3D settings there should be a Refresh Rates Override menu. Now Select Override Refresh Rates Then go down the list and find the setting that applies to you and change the refresh rate from Default to 60hz, which i think is the Lowest setting but I'm not sure. If this doesn't help let me know, I'll try to think something else up. I'm sure there is a solution that doesnt involve a new monitor. Hope this helps!
Agg

its not ur monitor...ur monitor prob works on those resolutions. its the vid card telling the monitor different resolutions than what it really is. fx5200s are known for this. download newers vid card drivers. that should fix the problem.

Something went wrong, maybe?
Hi all! Thanks a lot for the comments, I really appreciate your willingness to help me out here.
Agginor, I think I didn't understand your message very well, though. I mean, you told me to "go and change your Refresh Rate Overrides". Lemme quote your message:

Okay, I went there and at first I overrid everything. I left all options selected and clicked "apply". You can see what it looks like here (hold SHIFT, so that the picture opens in another window).
Since nothing changed, I decided to uncheck all other boxes except for the ones pertaining to my Screen Resolution (1152x864). It didn't work either.
I went to the section that reads "Screen Resolution" (which is right below "Refresh Rate Override") and tried different screen resolutions (again! If you read my first message you'll see that I had already tried all other resolutions), having both 60 and 75 Hertz. You can see the picture here (SHIFT again) as well.
Perhaps you're wondering about that box that reads "Hide modes that this monitor cannot support", because it is checked. Well, I tried unchecking it as well, it won't go lower than 60 Hertz (which I have tried with all resolutions I could, I wonder if I need something lower than 60 Hz. It doesn't make sense...). You can see another picture here for what it looks like when the box is unchecked.

Thanks a lot, Agg. I really hope you're right about it. Can you think about anything else at all? It's very frustrating when you buy a new monitor and realize it doesn't really work the way you expected. Same goes for the entire machine. It's not very satisfactory to buy products who don't work the way you want. Playing games is the minimum you (anyone) should expect.
As for wwwww:

download newers id card drivers. that should fix the problem.
I had downloaded one of the latest nVidia drivers before (even before I had installed Need for Speed UnderGround) but it seems it's not helping. Perhaps I should download other drivers (I always get rather confused when I'm on their page, cause I never really know what driver I need to download... those options and boxes sort of get me all lost), but I'm on a dial-up connection (yeah, I know, I'm not helping much here, am I?), and it takes forever to download 20mb (or more!) of drivers.
Anyways, thanks a lot everyone for the answers, I appreciate it. I'll keep trying. Please, if anyone can help in any way, that can only be welcomed. :-)
PS: For some obscure reason, I had problems opening the pictures (the ones for which I put links here) with Opera; it didn't happen with Internet Explorer, though, so if you use Opera and by any chance you experience that problem, you might consider using IE to view the pix.

I got a new monitor driver
Hi i had same problem you talked about. I used to play Civ III on my old machine and recently upgraded CPU but kept the old CRT monitor (MAG 770V).
When I tried running Civ III I would get that Out of Frequency error message. I tried pretty much the same things that were listed in this thread... nada.
It then hit me that Win XP was showing a default monitor so I thought I'd try to get a monitor driver or profile from URL thankfully this solved my problem. the driver even allows XP to automatically change the video settings. I'm happily building civilizations again!

read and you will be answered. try what the guy above you said first, then ask the exact same thing as the guy above you all said. then look around, frightened because i know your level of intelligence, run around in circles chasing your tail like a dog, but then realize you dont have one. and here is the quote from the guy above you.

goodluck!
-> what he said.
and new drivers might work too. or a combination of both monitor drivers and new drivers.
we cant tell you two what to do exactly step by step because we dont even know if you use nvidia or ati, or what screen you use or what model your cards are.
---------------------->>>>>>>>>>>>> help us help you (ie: read)
and kawsat, you are pretty much necromancing. necromancing means reviving a super old dated thread. its usually not very appreciated.

NVIDIA Card and LCD Screen
I'm running a GeForce PCX5300 with a 19" LG L1750SQ Flatron Screen. I've had a lot of problems running games, forever sick of the 'Frequency Out of Range' screen - and your thread gave me new hope. I tried enforcing frame ratesm but this didn't work... I downloaded new drivers for my card, and ran one of my games that hadn't worked before and much to my surprise it worked! Then I reset my computer and it won't work again!! Then... the next logical step would be to enforce the refresh rate with the new, fixed drivers... and guess what... they've taken the option away!!!
What is particularly frustrating is that the Fruquency out of Range screen normally comes up telling me that 60Hz is out of range and I really don't know why!! (And as it has now worked once I am completely baffled)
Has anyone come across this sort of problem before?

Problem Fixed - Display Mode Timing
Ok... for all you noobs out there like me ... I think I've found the problem and fixed it. Under Windows XP there is a 'Doublescan' feature for lower res modes. This is enabled by default, and after disabling this everything appears to be running much better. You'll find it under 'Display mode timing' for NVIDIA users.
