Issues activating Empire Total war

Installing the game wasn't a problem. The only problem was when I tried to activate the game.

When I activated it the whole screen went black, I couldn't see anything visual. The only thing I could recognize was the theme music playing in the background. My first impression was that my Computer system wasn't right for the game.

Computer System

Windows XP 2002, Service pack 3
AMD Athlon 1700+
1.47GHz, 1.5GB of RAM
256MG Video memory
44.3GB free hard disk space

Game requirements

Windows XP or Vista Service Pack 2
1GB of RAM (XP) 2GB of RAM (Vista)
Processor: 2.4GHz Intel, Pentium, AMD, Athlon
258MB Video memory

From these comparisons will I need to buy a new Processor or a completely new Motherboard. What product should be recommended. What are the costs
