Case dust consideration
this is a question you probably don`t hear very often
but over here in israel, in the south we have a great deal of dust flying around and that really dmgs the computer since i can`t exactly clean then up every day do you guys have any suggestions in the metar, maybe i should take a case with more or less holes if less i will need to install a large incase CPU cooler, but lets face it there are more stuff to cool besids the CPU ... |

what u need is filters. i use flyscreen, works great for me as my dust is from things like carpet & clothes, but i bet you're gonna need finer filtration.
ultra fine cloth filters should work good, but you need to clean them often. if it's very dusty you might need to clean the filters once a week. you should be able to see the dust/dirt buildup on the filters. biggest problem is gonna be making the filters, i know what type of cloth makes a nice filter but have no idea what it's called. it's sort of like a light/fine pantyhose. it's fine but thin enough that it's not hard for the fans to breathe through. |

well what about a case, what type of case should i take
one with just one or two large vents sounds like a fine decision but damn puting cloth all over them will be UGLY !! |

Well if you want the least amount of dust possible in your case then you could consider going with like an external wc system, especially a passive one, because if you have fans moving air through your case then its gonna be moving dust through it as well, and if you don't have the right pressure build up from your fans then you could just be trapping the dust in the comp.
I mean I knows its not a quite on topic suggestion and can get a little pricey. But just for a case then just get filters, they don't cover up your whole case, you just put them over your fans.

u dont have to wrap the whole case in cloth! you can fit cloth on the inside of case vents, or wrap the fans, etc the cloth doesnt have to be visible. i dunno what furnace filters are but they might also be good.
the wc option is interesting, which gives me another idea. u could get a large passive heatpipe cooler and fit a large passive heatpipe cooler to graphics card, unless it is already a passive cooler. u can get fanless psu aswell. to make the most out of passive cooling you would want to make a large vent at the base of case or at the bottom side case panel and a large vent up top. if the dust is crazy then these vents will need to be filtered aswell!. all comes down to how much u wanna spend.... here's a couple of fanless solutions that will keep most pc's cool http://www.endpcnoise.com/cgi-bin/e...less_Cases.html they have no internal airflow and the heatsinks are external so there wont be any internal dust and it will be very easy to clean the heatsinks |

If you are afraid of dust in the PC, then a positive case pressure is essential. The secret is filtering all intakes and then the positive pressure does not allow air to seep in through any other holes in the case. In this manner, your case should remain completely dust-free, so long as your filters work fine. Don't forget to clean the filters often enough, since you don't want to reduce your airflow too much. They sell actual filters for fans pre-made, but as has been suggested, pantyhose work great too. Anything made of nylon. It sometimes helps to stretch it out a little to make it get a little extra air through.

actualy a friend of my got himself one of those but it is very expensive the pantyhose sound pretty good to me and yea i'll try somehow to put them inside, that will make my case choosing all difrent, is that what everybody do? or did u never had a problem with dust ? i wonder weather i should pick a large or a smaller case right now i am going to the more smaller one because it fits great my small computer's room and will let me move it around easily, but i am really not sure |

I clean my system using an air compressor every 2 months or so. The PSU and heasinks really get full of dust. My case has been running open ever since I started "painting" my case... It's been at least six months since, but that's another story for another time

![]() My case is open as well because I have been putting in a new window for a few weeks now. Need to get some more grinding stones for my dremel . |

With teh exception of my main system in the house, none of my computers has a case around it... They all reside in the garage, conveniently placed near an air compressor, so they get blown out at least once a week.
