Radeon HD 2900 xt problems
For the past few weeks, I've been struggling with my Radeon HD 2900 XT. It had been working fine for almost a year, when one day I tried to play Civ 4 and it crashed. Ever since then, the card has just not been working. When my computer stats, the POST screen is pixelated, and so is the windows logo. If the computer even makes it to the log in screen, the mouse icon is messed up, as well as the other images in the log in screen. Once I log in, the computer crashes, hard, and a blue screen comes up.
Since then, I started my computer in safe mode, which works just fine, uninstalled the drivers, and now I can start my computer up, although the POST and windows loading screen is still corrupted. I've tried re-installing drivers, the newest versions and some old versions, and I've reinstalled windows. But the problem remains.
So, I come here looking for help. I'm about to give up, assuming that my video card is just burnt out, and buy a new nvidia 9800 gx2 to replace it.
Any suggestions? Even a recommendation for a different video card replacement would be appreciated.

First thing I would do is take out the videocard and see how much dust has collected.
If there is no dust ,you can always try taking off the heatsink and reapplying some arcticsilver 5 or some other heatsink compound....It has worked for some of my friends in the past.
If it's fried i would recommend, and you decide to go the Nvidia way........Company's like EVGA/XFX/BFG have lifetime warranties.
I'm partial to EVGA........they have great customer service.
As you can see in my sig below I own 2 8800GT's and still have 7900GTX for backup.(all EVGA)
Personally I would stay away from 9800 X2........If one of the boards dies your stuck without a V/C til you get your RMA back.
If you went with 2 8800GT's (approx $250 or cheaper) in SLI you should be able to play any game out there.........and if one fries your still good to go.
I know I can play Crysis all settings on high and it run smoooooooth...........JMO

Okay, For anyone that owns this video card... first things you have to know is, there are 2 lights on the top. If any of the lights are red there is not enough power going to the card. The light on the outer left side (from a birds eye view with the monitor outputs facing away from you) is your 8-pin. The light on the right is your 6-pin.
If none of these lights are red and you video card is having problems, it's probably shot.
If the lights are red try unplugging and plugging the 8 and 6 pin cords back into the card.
I've actually had to do this about 10 times in a row before the card would take sufficient power. Sometimes more!!
Also if your power supply has two 8-pins, try switching them both repeatedly.
By doing this relentlessly you'll discover if it's your 2900HD XT or if it's your power supply. I've found its my 2900...
It actually runs off just the 8-pin as my 6-pin connector in the card is shot.
Just a quick fix for anyone who had the same problem... time for a new video card though
