Question Problems with my disply (Monitor shuts off)

For the past few days I've been dealing with a very weird problem with my monitor. Every time I shut the monitor off, the computer goes to stand-by or I try to run a game, the monitor shuts off and I can't turn it back on. To do so, I have to unplug the monitor, wait a few seconds, and then plug it again. I'm guessing this has something to do with either my graphics card (it's probably having problems with sending info to the monitor) or Catalyst Control Center, witch I installed no too long ago. The monitor is fairly new and, when not shutting off unexpectedly :P, it seems to be working great.
And one more thing. The other day the monitor stopped responding and I got a message error from Catalyst Control Center saying something about VPU recovery and I had to restart the PC.
I’ve tried to downgrade my drivers and upgrade them again but that didn’t help.
This is the first time something like this has ever happened to me so I was hoping that you could tell me what the problem is.
Thanks.

Here are my PC specs:

Intel(R)
Pentium(R) D CPU 3.2GHz
1.00 GB of RAM
OS: Windows XP Professional V.2002 (with service Pack 2)

Display:
ATI Radeon 9550 / X1050 Series

yah i have a similar problem (i think)

When in certain areas of certain games (WoW for example) my monitor goes black as if in sleep mode and I can not get it to display anything until I manually reboot my computer.

I have an x800xt 512mb and would appreciate any help or suggestions. I have already tried uninstalling all graphic drivers, reinstalling them, downgrading the driver etc etc etc and no dice.

thanks

I can't even get access to my pc (monitor standby) on some catalysts, then I can't set the resolution above 640x480 and on others I get this weird 'screen scrolling effect' where when you move the mouse, you move the display. Ati don't give any help because they've already got money out of you. Once they've got the money, your stuck with a fully working graphics card with dead drivers. Omega drivers don't even work! I wish Ati would wake up...

As for this problem, do me a favor if possible and run the card in PCI-e x8 mode. (It WONT affect performance as a card of that power only needs about 6-7 of those 8 lanes.)
I ran into that problem with my X1650GT... the last 8 lanes on the card were bad. If this is an AGP card ignore this post.

Ati Catalyst 8.7 works for my AGP Sapphire Radeon X1650 Pro 256MB. The odd freeze up in 3Dmark06, but that could just be down to the CPU-it's only 1.3GHz, and I use my PC mostly for image editing, but I do use games.
