Ati2mtag error

I've recently started having computer problems where my computer just locks up and the only way out is to reboot. I originally thought it was just a case of me needing to update my graphic card drivers but the problems keep continuing. It wasn't until I checked the event viewer in XP (SP2) that I realised that it was the same error over and over again that was causing the problem. The error reported is:
ati2mtag: CRT invalid display type.

Now I have recently switched monitors. I am now using a TFT monitor which was given to me by a family member as they had just upgraded theirs. Before that I was using a CRT monitor.

What I've done so far:
Updated graphic card driver
Uninstalled and reinstalled monitor using device manager
Contacted ATI support with no reply/response
Cleaned card fan (dust etc)

I've checked the monitor's manufacturer website and there doesn't seem to be a driver available for download. If there was a CD that came with it then I've no idea where it will be.

Anyone had this error or similar problem? or can anyone offer any suggestions?

Thanks.

P.S. If it helps I'm using a Radeon 9800 XT (yes I know its old, but it will have to do till I can afford an upgrade)

I feel your pain. I'm having the exact same problem. Someone suggested this as a solution to the problem and I wanted to check if anyone else has tried it.

"Give this a shot - solves the problem for sure:
Right click-mouse over My Computer
Properties
Hardware(Tab)
Device Manager(button)
Click [+] next to System devices
right-mouse on CPU to AGP Controller (or whatever your controller is called, mine was SiS AGP)
Update Driver(button)
Select Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)
Next(button)
Select Don't search. I will choose the driver to install.
Next(button)
Select PCI standard PCI-to-PCI bridge
Next(button)
Finish(button)
Reboot."

My problem is mostly with Dreamfall the Longest Journey that I purchased through Steam a few nights ago. I'll start the game and it will crash and reboot itself with no error message. I only found out about this error through the event viewer. I have an X700 Pro AGP, and am hesitant to try this solution. Anyone know anything about this?

Appreciate any info.

Olgeezer your solutions seemed to really help me. I recentley had to re-intstall windows XP and basically reformated my system. Getting World of Warcraft to work again was a huge pain in my ass. I was ready to go out and buy another vid card because I tried everthing to work. I would log on, move my character around for a few seconds then my system would lock and my screen would go black and I had to reset my comp. So far no lock ups or screens going black....crosses fingers. I'm currently using a Radeon 9550 SE series. I'm not really impressed with it because no way it should be this hard to get a driver to work. I had downloaded everything from the ATI website and still nothing! Thanks olgeezer! I hope this fixes everything.

A possible solution

Having this problem too - the ati2mtag event viewer error.

Everyone was talking about specific versions of ATI's drivers when someone at Guru3D suddenly mentioned his change from CRT to TFT monitor.

True enough, I have recently started to use a TFT monitor - and although Windows has used the new screen well, I had some old Viewsonic monitor drivers hanging around in the system. Uninstalled these, seems to have done the trick.

95% certain (I did some parallel changes also but not very significant).
