Why not.

By then the current highend mac book pros will be pretty much the macbooks and so forth and maybe Apple will get their asses together and realize how under powered their pc's are compared to the rest of the world.

Their machines are far from underpowered. They're "underpowered" in the sense that you don't get as much bang for your buck, and there are limited options. I for one, think it's hiedous that you cannot get dedicated graphics without spending $2k.

Which leads me to my second point. The current MBPs will be nothing like the next gen MBs. The new MBs will still have intergrated graphics (either GMA 950 or GMA x3000), and will still have a lower base config, and probably still be the crappy 13.3" LCD size.

Well first of all, and forgive me if I am mistaken, but the upgradability that you are complaining about for Macs has more to do with the form than Apple's hardware choices. Mac Pros are easily upgradeable, because they are in tower cases; doesn't an all-in-one PC like the Sony Vaio LS series face the same limitations for upgrading as an iMac?

Secondly, an iMac is not more expensive than a Vaio LS, which it more closely resembles than a regular desktop.

Unfortunately, because Sony apparently doesn't let you customize the LS at all, it will be a little difficult to compare these two. But lets see what you get for $2000 at both ends.

iMac:

2.1 Ghz Core 2 Duo
24 inch widescreen
1 GB ram
250 GB HD
7300 GT

Sony Vaio LS:

2.0 Ghz Core 2 Duo
19 inch widescreen
2 GB ram
320 GB HD
7400 Go

A 7400 Go isn't really going to be much better than a 7300 GT (although, why is Sony using a mobile graphics card in the LS anyway?). On the iMac, you get a slightly faster Core 2 Duo, and a much, much larger screen, while the LS comes with an extra 70 GB, and a GB more ram. Personally, I think the iMac is a better deal, because I would much rather have the nice big screen, plus it is possible to upgrade memory in iMacs I think.

Heh, you'd take the bigger screen over a gig of ram. Methinks that's not a good idea. Look, another thing, most people don't care/want an all in one. They want the best power for their money, and the Mac mini doesn't offer that. Either way, the iMac/Mac Mini are still limited in upgradability, and the iMac's seemingly good monitor goes out when it's obsolete.

Forget the Mac pro, unless you want to pay AT LEAST $2200.

I would take a bigger screen over a gig of ram because I'm nto going to be using my Mac to play games obviously.

I happen to use my computer to watch movies - so taking the 24 inch screen over a little 19 inch one makes perfect sense for me

And I have done price comparisons between the MacBook Pro and various other laptops, and it has come out to be like 50 dollars cheaper than its Dell counterpart with the exact same specs.

Ok, but a good portion of people watch movies on their much larger (possibly HDTV) televisions. (Full screen on a 1920x1600 looks like crap). Anyway, that's your preference, but it doesn't suit everyone. (Note: Extra ram helps the OS too). (Note2: Movies kill computer and console drives (good luck replacing that Apple drive, you'll likely need to either get the "Applecare" ripoff, or pay an Apple licensed repair center)

No doubt. Even without bluetooth in the Dell, it's probably still respecable. Note that Dell is not the only, nor the cheapest laptop maker. Still, Apple's pro products are very competitive in comparison to the PC market, but their consumer products are overpriced, and unupgradable. You pay for the consumer product aspect of "Consumer oriented design" than you do for power. If I were to get a high end computer (laptop or desktop), I'd hit the Macbook Pro, or Mac Pro all up. But consumer end, my Gatway was the best value by far for what I need, and that's why I'll go two years without getting a new mac.
