The Story of The PowerBook G4 and the Graphics Corruption
Hey guys,
Just got this 1.67GHz PowerBook G4, which I'm using now. It's an excellent machine but I sometimes get the odd colour corruption of the graphics on the built in display. It comes every once in a while but only lasts about 5 minutes. I am using the PowerBook now and it is working brilliantly! No graphics issues at the moment, the colours are good and the backlight is working If someone can tell me why I get this it would be a great help, which is much appreciated! I do think it is the ribbon cable connecting the logic board to the 15.2" Display, seeing as there aren't any issues with the backlight.

EDIT: I've noticed the cursor and certain colours are not affected by this corruption

From my own research, it seems to be the LCD Display Data cable. I'm ordering a new one and it should be arriving this weekend. I'll let you guys know how I get on

I'm blanking ATM, but there are some great resources out there for people hanging on to PowerPC Macs. (I wish I had one just so I could fool with PowerPC assembly).
Apparently, someone compiled the latest Firefox 4 beta for PowerPC, so even though official branches and Apple themselves may be throwing PPC under the bus, there's some life left in the later G4s/G5s.

Well the part came yesterday and I fixed the PowerBook.
Tip of the day: If you don't want a headache, never attempt repairing a PowerBook. It took two hours in total to fix the PowerBook, while reading iFixit's guide. 30 minutes to disassemble and find the right screwdrivers, 30 mins to reassemble and an hour just to figure out how to route the cable through the hinge etc! At least the repair was worth it, because this machine is ridiculously fast!
Specs:
1.67GHz PowerPC G4 Processor
1GB DDR SDRAM
Hitachi HTS541080G9AT00 80GB original Apple HDD
Slot loading SuperDrive
FireWire 400 and FireWire 800 support
DVI and SVideo display connectors
Airport Extreme and Bluetooth
Gigabit Ethernet (I think)
Built-in 56k modem
15" display at 1280x854
Mac OS 10.5.8 (Leopard)
Since this is a common fault with PowerBook G4s, I added some tape to the cable around by the hinge, to add a bit of strength to it. Keeping that in mind, I'm still being extra careful with my PowerBook, because I want the repair to last.
Keep this around, so someone else can fix their issue if they get any problems
The iFixit guide I followed: http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/Installing-PowerBook-G4-Aluminum-15-Inch-1-5-1-67-GHz-Display/352/1
