Hi,
have tried to install itunes and am getting three error messages which prevent it from being installed, 1402, 1406, and 1603. I have read on the apple website somewhere about having administrator privelages to be able to install it but i am the only user of the computer and everything else under the sun installs fine, just itunes. I tried to email apple about it but alas they do not have an email address anywhere on their site. please help!!!!! ![]() |

Google for "iTunes installation error 1402,1406 and 1603" keywords and go thru the first result they come up with.

I had the 1603 problem. The only thing that would work was the Windows Install Clean Up. Thank you!

Reinstalled windows, did some driver updates, os updates, then itunes latest version 5.01 something. Not only did it go on without a hitch, but the useless "bonjour!" service (relating to wireless play or something) has been taken out by apple!
So now the only thing I had to do was disable the ipod service and the ipod helper startup variable for a nice, clean install =) I came to the conclusion that it was an issue with either klite codec pack, foobar, winamp, media player classic, or something else that changes permissions for your extensions and their various "open with" apps. |

Thank You SOOOOO much, Jodiuh!!!! I adapted your aproach to MY PROBLEM by doing the same thing for MY PROBLEM REGISTRY KEY: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\QuicktimePlaye rLib.QuickTimePlayerApp\CLSID The Problem kept resurfacing & the install kept stopping on a newer key further down. After about 8 attempts at allowing permissions, I finally deleted all the QUICKTIME Keys under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\ It wouldn't allow me to delete two of them, but I did the others. The install went through without a problem. Just an FYI incase others are having this problem. Of course I'd would advise them to back up their registry - disaterous results may have - I'm not responsible......blah blah blah...;-) But Jodiuh's approach worked for me when Apple Tech support was useles! I'm VERY thankful!!! ![]() |

I Have DONE IT! You Need to type into Run - regedit, then on all of your quicktime[if you have a problem with quicktime installing] tabs click the "+" icon, and click on CLSID. An error will pop up saying soemthing about not being able to change any permissions or that, but thats just bull! SO just click ok, then click the add button, then type in your screen name if your names Mark, your screen name may be " Mark Rules" or something, so type that in click ok, and keep clickin ona dd, and enter "Everyone" and "SYSTEM". Once you have put that info into all the CLSID tabs that give an error, close regedit, and restart the installation!

okay well this seems to work for changing permissions because i kept gettin "cannot open key" bullsh*t...
you have to open each key one by one(some may pop up during the process so keep refreshing) and change permissions... i know it doesn't let you... but you have to add [your username] and "everyone" and "system" to the list of people with permission... give them all full permission then click advanced then do the same with auditing tab if it is available.... then open "effective permissions" tab and add you username there as well... then open the owner tab and if it doesn't want you to change sh*t just double click your username which should be there... you might notice that the "apply" button now notices a change.... any way click ok and then click ok on the first screen.... follw these steps on ALL quicktime keys... or what ever the error is saying... but keep checking back in the local_machine/software/classes/quicktime...blahblahblah... because new keys show up and that fu*king itunes keeps giving me new error keys saying i dont have permission... this works for allowing permission because i was not able to change it before... good luck ![]() |

When Permissions on the Key Cannot Be Changed
Like Jodiuh, I was unable to to change the permissions on the key. I would also have to agree with him about it being a codec pack or hosed registry. This is how I was able to fix it short of reinstalling windows. 1. Download and install subinacl from Microsoft 2. Create a file named reset.cmd in C:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools folder. 3. Edit the reset.cmd file with the following content. subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=administrators=f subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=administrators=f subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=administrators=f subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=administrators=f subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /gr |
