I think that GMX is saything that the two different cores use the 2000MHz HTT to communicate with each other, and the P4 has to use some of the 800MHz which is normally allocated for accessing memory. This is news to me, but I don't really know much about how the two cores communicate.

The problem isn't "core communication" it mainly rests with memory bandwith and fsb limitations. Being as though the athlon's don't have a fsb b/c of the ondie memory controller...they dont' have that problem. They do however only have ~6.8gb/s of memory bandwith which is limiting when both cores have to share that. The Pentium D problem is that their 64-bit 800mhz fsb bottlenecks when the dual cores try to maximize their ddr2-667 memory controller. It's also my understanding that the x2 archetecture is much more sophisticated of a technology as well... The Pentium D is likened to gluing to p4's together

The HTT links AGP, PCI, IDE,etc to the CPU, not core to core afaik.

I can see how the on-die memory controller helps though, but surely the bandwidth of DDR2-667 will come in handy now (assuming we put our bus speed up to 1333)...

And can the X2 cores access the other core's cache?

Yey! The FX59...

In a lot of the encoding benchmarks that were tested the AMDs come out ahead. But what is really impressive is that the dual core AMD beats out the dual core intel in every single encoding benchmark (except for lame mp3 encoding where it loses by only 5 seconds) and absolutely destroys it in games.

But I wouldn't hold my breath on AMD breaking 3.8GHz in the next year. They might get close but they won't get 3.8... the current world record for an overclocked AMD is something like 4GHz... and thats with phase change and not even close to stable.

I was talking to BoobahKiller in Yahoo the other day; we were both thinking of doing some upgrades to our systems, but we are thinking of holding out to see what the FX59 has to offer; I am told that it is going to be one heck of a powerful CPU.

Well...

Well either way we are looking at some real crazy times in the world of cyber-land. Ya I am back I had a really "Country song" happening the past month; Computer died, cats got sick, had some very expensive stuff stolen (Laptop, 2 TB External hard drive, all my repair tools and about $7000.00 in software), Mom died and lots of other stuff, almost got tossed out of school... But yes I am holding out for the FX59 and I am rebuilding my system with the Asus A8N-SLI P. as my CPU Died, more so of my own stupidity so I put in an old 3500 so I am up and running, till I rebuild.
