err? Really, Intel has been winning. I know the extreme edition s 478 did really well in gaming, but that good, wow. I thouhgt the Pentium D was smithfield.

the extreme edition didn't really do that well... hes saying that dothans are better at gaming. And Pentium D's are smithfield cores, but smithfield are the same as prescott except dual core... same pipeline and architecture.

they need a new name. pentium is old. D, E, etc. why not just call the next one "X" and then something new and snappy?

I love my rig, it owns for every game. I just realized that i load a lot faster in BF2 than a guy that has an A64 3800+ with my P4 3,2 prescott. Pretty embarassing. Though 64's run a lot better for gaming, i'm happy with my P4 prescott. BF2 never gets under 50 fps with high settings, except for two, and fast loading.

but when you really game....it's all about fragging and rubbing it in your friend's face because he's got 2 cores and 64 bits and you've only got a sempron and you just won because he was too slow at the trigger

The only negative I see to macs, the lack of games.

Sort of, but Mac is *nix. Windows is, well, I don't really know what it's concidered. NT isn't really DOS based.

Yes, because you have to deal with dependancies in the system.

In a lot of the encoding benchmarks that were tested the AMDs come out ahead. But what is really impressive is that the dual core AMD beats out the dual core intel in every single encoding benchmark (except for lame mp3 encoding where it loses by only 5 seconds) and absolutely destroys it in games.

But I wouldn't hold my breath on AMD breaking 3.8GHz in the next year. They might get close but they won't get 3.8... the current world record for an overclocked AMD is something like 4GHz... and thats with phase change and not even close to stable.

Its with LN2 bro=)

you know
northwood vs barton k7
dothan vs K8

but the X2 is 2x2.4GHz, the dual core prescott is 2x3.2Ghz at comparable clocks, we can use the entire pipeline with encoding, the prescott should win.

No, The presscott shares the 800 mhz bus between the two cores. Thats why the AMDs X2 HTT link is actualy put to good use now.

Too many variables mate. You could have a fully tweaked windows install, whereas the guy with an A64 3800 has shitloads of crap in the background. On this comp, i run 20 processes on bootup including the stupid mouse/kb drivers (2). My friends avg= ~45 processes.

HTT link? what's it link? there's very little need for AGP-to-CPU communication. The PCI/IDE/SRC/etc don't need that kind of bandwidth. The HTT bus is pretty useless even with dual cores.
