AMD Barcelona

For anyone interested in what AMD will be producing later this year, AnandTech has written an article detailing the gubbins of the next generation processor from Texas.

http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipset...aspx?i=2939&p=1

Personally I'm rather looking forward to what's coming, though the question right now is not whether it will be enough to topple the Core 2 or even if it has come quickly enough, but whether AMD can pick up its pace and continue to give Intel a run for its money. As the article points out, during the Netburst generation AMD had become somewhat slack in updating its product line, meanwhile Intel was rapidly accelerating with its developments of Dothan, Yonah etc. to finally come out with Conroe. Many of us here on the forums, myself included, could see it coming though I think many of us AMD 'fanboys' had hoped that the Texan competitor would not take this long to produce a truly worthwhile retort. That said, the competition from both firms is benefiting us all right now, so let's hope for more in the future.

Hey I follow the prices. More competition, normally better prices. Even if Intel underperforms or vice versa, its what ever the budget fits.

It looks promising. But it depends on launch and price if they want to beat out intel. There are even rumours that Intel already has a quad core that is. what amd calls, "native".

I really dont think they will pull it off in time. But Im normally wrong when predicting things that are unpredictable.

I think too much right now depends upon how AMD proceed with what they have. I have a feeling it is going to take far more frequent product refreshes than is currently the case for both companies to succeed. I have an inkling that we may start to see a product cycle that is more akin to what we see in the graphics card industry as the two companies go head to head. Something akin to the ATi/nVidia situation that we currently see.

Well, AMD basically refreshed there fx series, and Intel is going to refresh there core 2 duo series soon. I dont think a major breakthrough will come for awhile.

I enjoy watching these things closely. Whether I buy one or not is less important. I buy AMD right now, because they haven't let me down. So I will remain loyal. But personally, my imagination wishes things were better than either AMD or Intel can produce. However, with the way AMD likes to do things, I think in the end it will work out for them.

Well looking closely at this information, other information, and a amd video conference thing, you do some calculations, and other poeple over at XS agree, staticticall a 2.3ghz K10 dual core will be about the same as a 3.6Ghz Conroe. so is quad cores, a 2.3ghz K10 would be a 3.6ghz kentsfield. if this is the case, that isn't too shabby.

Also if you look at what has been said, for the end of the year(when i plan to upgrade) they should be out at 2.9ghz. now looking at what hapened with K8, they could get further than this, so it is looking good from my view, so long as statistics hold up.

Hmm yes they have past a few month's before anyone post in these section and now the tim e has come for the Agena CPU's to enter in the scene so here are pictures of it.

PS: I am pretty much aware that this is necro but regardless this is a very crucial news and I thought it's priority was high and it's worth a silly necro.

These looks nice but not sure that it is true. Though here is a high-end system with Amd Quad CPU...Maybe we will have one( in the market) in these year

It always seems that the worse a company does, the more information it divulges. We saw this behavior with Intel at the end of the Pentium 4 era, and we're definitely seeing it now with AMD. Enjoy it while it lasts, because it sure makes the industry a lot more exciting to talk about.

Today's disclosures are many of the things we alluded to in our last article about AMD's future, what we called The Road Ahead. If you were waiting for us to fill in the blanks, this article will do just that.

Barcelona Update

Before getting into the new stuff, AMD gave us a brief update on Barcelona, whose launch is now hopefully less than a month away. Barcelona is the second CPU to plug into what AMD is calling its 2nd generation Opteron platform, it will have one more socket-compatible successor before the platform is retired:

The first Barcelona processors available will be the HE (Energy Efficient) and standard performance CPUs, running at speeds of 2.0GHz or lower at launch:

In Q4 of this year AMD will introduce the SE (High Performance) Barcelona parts, running at 2.3GHz and above.

AMD is doing its best to sugar coat the low clock speed launch by saying that it's addressing the majority of the market at these clocks, but the fact of the matter is that AMD would be singing a different tune if it was able to achieve higher clock speeds at launch.

Thumbs up Wel let us see the result

Some new information

We hoped we wouldn't get many of those, but in the Barcelona case, we got more than we thought. By the time we got through fixing them all, we were six months-plus later from where we originally wanted to be", for the newspaper Sunday's Mercury News. During those six months, the server division from AMD had to repair a number of bugs and to face the increasing Intel competition without a powerful enough processor, which led to the now (in)famous price wars.

The AMD design for Barcelona processors stresses the fact that a native quad core implementation will deliver better performance than Intel's method of simply putting two dual core processing units in a single package. While Intel's so called quad core processors may not achieve the full performance benefits of a native and complete quad core solution, it did allow Intel to ship in its CPUs almost a year earlier.
