AMD Athlon Processor Compatibility question!

AMD Athlon Processor Compatibility question!

My current processor is an AMD 64 X2 5000+ AM2

I want to upgrade to this:

AMD Athlon II X2 250 Regor 3.0GHz 2 x 1MB L2 Cache Socket AM3 65W Dual-Core Processor

But I noticed that that one is an AM3 socket processor. Will my mobo AM2 socket be able to support an AM3 socket processor?

The reason for the upgrade is that I think my current processor is bottlenecking my 8800 GTS card. My friend suggested a new processor.

Ya, some AM2 motherboards will support AM3 chips, but not all of them will.

As Mana Vampire said the easiest way is to find out what motherboard you have and go from there.

AM3 processors have both internal DDR2 and DDR3 memory controllers. This allows them to work in both AM2+ motherboards (DDR2 only) and AM3 motherboards (DDR3 only). Which AM2+ motherboards the AM3 processors work in depends on the manufacturer which sometimes only have to provide a BIOS update to do this. Sometimes this is not possible.

You also have to be careful about which AM3 processor you pick. AM3 processors are rated from 65W to 140W. Only certain motherboards can handle the higher power ones.

We still do not know what motherboard he has. It could be an AM2 or an AM2+ one.

BTW, my motherboard is AM2+ and supports AM2, AM2+, and AM3 CPUs. This includes the AMD 64 X2 5000+ AM2.
