9800GX2 and 6400+

haya guys just wanting to know if a AMD 6400+ will bottleneck the 9800GX2 as i have ordered the card and is on its way and also would any AMD chip be able to handle Qaud sli 9800GX2 (2x9800GX2) without bottlenecking cheers

Don't worry. Most data will go straight from memory to the GPU, without even seeing the CPU.

Bigger problem will be the fact that, unless you run a 64bit OS, with two 9800 GX2 cards, your memory will be limited to less than 2GB, which will be rather small, considering you'll want to run everything at high detail.

so you saying a cpu can never bottleneck the gpu or are you saying the 6400+ should not as it is powerfull enough, im quite certain that the cpu has alot to do with the gpu in regards to bottlenecking and i think i would need a powerfull cpu to run 2x9800gx2 as people are saying that 3x8800 ultras are bottlenecking quite easy with the Q6600 and still after OC well i know im confused but some one will hopefully shed some light on this for me thanks for your reply too mate thanks

I'm not saying that a CPU can never bottleneck a GPU, but a 6400 probably is way fast enough for most things, and a lot of other parts of your system will bottleneck before the CPU will.

Your screen, for instance, will bottleneck quite surely. It can't do more than 60 fps, unless you're using a CRT, which will cap at around 100fps, if it's a good one.

Like I said, I'd worry about memory way before I'd worry about my CPU. Those two 1GB cards are gonna eat a lot out of your 4GB address pool. And if you run out of memory, your harddisk becomes the bottleneck.

haha yep i understand and i am quite familiar with pc tech and am sure that everything else is not going to bottlenrck heres my spec

Your CPU is plenty fast, especially at 3.5Ghz. Sure the intel boys will beat you in benchmarks, but you'll play games JUST fine with no realistic limitation on the GPU.

um dont know what you guys are talking about, the 6400+ was a total bottleneck for the 9800GX2, even when oc. so i switched to the q6600 got it oc to 3.6GHZ and now theres no bottleneck ,just having plenty driver problems now stupid graphics card any of you guys having problems, my problems are call of duty 4 doesnt play well on full meaning a bit slow reaction and random/anoying lags, tried 174.53 and same problem desktop performance is great but then as soon as i switch to 174.74 desktop is really slow and games are the same, the new beta drivers are good 174.93 call of duty 4 plays good since i can remember but crysis does that slow reaction thing god this is anoying
