Code Creatures
Code Creatures is based on CodeCult's object-oriented gaming engine. It uses DirectX 8 and 9 features.

I was disappointed when I saw this, since I was expecting to see 30 FPS from this card, even at the Balanced setting. Performance didn't help much here either, bumping the frame rate from 28.4 FPS to 28.9 FPS isn't much, but it is a small accomplishment. However, I don't know of any major software running on Code Creatures, so you may want to take this result a bit lightly.
Comanche 4
NovaLogic's Comanche 4 demo comes with a nice benchmarking tool for DirectX 8 performance.

After this test, a pattern began to emerge. Performance settings weren't worth much, and at best, they helped you get a frame or two. They work if you're looking to squeeze every last frame in 3DMark. Since this is a DirectX 8 game, on the other hand, that may play a role in the results as well.
Unreal Tournament 2003
Finally, Unreal Tournament 2003, a well known game with some benchmarking utilities added by the people at [H]ardOCP. It is a good test of gaming performance. I ran this test at 1024x768x32 and 1280x1024x32, two common resolutions.

Here, I believe, is where the answer to the Performance setting lies: actual gaming. I was treated to an extra 40 FPS in Asbestos at 1024x768 and 20 FPS at 1280x1024, and that will make anybody happy.
