ProLink PixelView GeForce FX5900XT Golden Limited Review - Testing: UT2K3 and Splinter Cell
(Page 5 of 9 )
UT2K3 (DirectX 8.1)
Unreal Tournament 2003 is a fairly solid DX8 test and representative of what can now be considered older games. I used HardOCP's benchmark program to run "high quality" tests at 1280x1024, 32-bit color.

The FX 5900XT's 256-bit bus is responsible for its superior performance. While the 5700 and 9600 run neck in neck, the 5900 is on a whole different playing field. It simply has greater bandwidth.

Upping anti-aliasing to 4x shows the same trend. The 5900XT performs nearly 20FPS greater than its competition at every setting. At 1280x1024 and 4x AA 8x AF, 63.6 FPS on an outdoor map like antalus is plenty.
Splinter Cell (DirectX 8.1)
The Splinter Cell demo used for benchmarking, recorded on level "The Caspian Oil Refinery," stresses fillrate and shading efficiency. AA and AF were disabled.

Here the differences between the three cards are not so prominent, but the FX5900XT still holds an advantage over the other two cards tested. Note that NVIDIA's mainstream top dog comes in dead last while for about $20 more, a FX 5900XT can give you the best performance.
