MSI FX5700 Ultra TD128 - Testing - Far Cry, Call of Duty

    Far Cry (DirectX 9)

Far Cry is a game by Ubisoft, the publisher of all the Tom Clancy games. While Far Cry is due out in March, a playable demo has been released recently and is already generating a lot of positive feedback with its incredible graphics and promising game play. In the absence of HL2 and Doom III, Far Cry, utilizing the CryEngine, looks to be the most graphically demanding game, and reasonably so with a similar "real-time rendering engine." Dead bodies remain on-screen, and when they are shot at, bounce around realistically. FRAPS was used to find framerate during one specific, repeatable section of the demo. The card was tested using the following settings: resolution of 1024x768x32, no AA no AF, default detail options.

stark contrast to our Need For Speed: Underground results, the FX5700U performs significantly better than the overclocked R9600Pro in Far Cry. The FX5700U is able to stay above 30 FPS at all times as well! Here are screenshots of Far Cry at 1280x1024 on the FX5700U and R9600P, resized to 640x512.

The FX5700U's shadows are just a shade darker than the R9600P's, otherwise IQ looks identical.

    Call of Duty (OpenGL)

Our last game is based off the old Quake III engine. There have been numerous visual upgrades of course, but Call of Duty still runs pretty smoothly on many setups. FRAPS was used to benchmark the car ride through town under fire in the single player game. The graphics settings used were a 1280x1024x32, 2x AA, 8x AF. This is the full version of CoD.

    Call of Duty

Both cards are hit hard by the 2x8x AA/AF at such a high resolution as 1280x1024 in CoD, dipping to 24 FPS. On average however, the FX5700U runs nearly 17 FPS faster than the overclocked R9600Pro, a sign of its greater core and memory clock in full effect. Here are screenshots of CoD at the benchmarked settings on the FX5700U and R9600P, resized to 640x512.

Again, the FX5700U and R9600P have very close image quality.
