The maximum core and memory overclock of the Gigabyte X800 Pro was 550MHz core and 1100MHz memory. This is an increase of 75MHz core and 200MHz memory over the 475/900 stock speed. But the card does not support hardware monitoring. The 6800 is the better performer for Halo and Far Cry while the X800 Pro takes the lead in NFSU.
Introduction
A new era is upon the gaming community, where some games finally utilize so much processing power that the need for a P4 3GHz+ or equivalent processor and $400 video card is actually somewhat sound. It feels like it was just yesterday when the 5950 Ultra, 9800XT, and lesser cards modified and overclocked to match the former, reigned supreme as the top graphics accelerators available. But as the latest title from id software shows, greater power is required and both NVIDIA and ATI have answered.
We have previously looked at the GeForce 6800, a variant of NVIDIA's top GPU. Today, we are going to examine an offering from ATI's best line of GPUs, the X800 series, and more specifically the X800 Pro. ATI has caught a lot of flack with the X800 series because in some cases, the cards appear as if they are simply more powerful 9800XTs. NVIDIA's latest GPUs support most noticeably Shader Model 3.0 and ATI has no answer. ATI has also been having issues producing enough X800 XT-PEs to meet demand, and their lackluster Doom 3 performance has certainly created caution in what would have been impulse buyers. ATI is certainly having no easy ride with the X800s like they did with the 9700s and 9800s.
Gigabyte is a provider of several different IT products. Their main business has been motherboards, graphics cards, and system platforms, but they have expanded their product line to include notebooks, servers, networking products, and even LCD displays. Gigabyte is one of few companies that offers both ATI and NVIDIA graphics cards. Their graphics line stretches from 9200s to X800s for ATI and MX4000s to 6800s for NVIDIA, including PCI Express solutions for the newer generation of cards. Today, Dev Hardware will review the Gigabyte X800 Pro.
