    Gainward TV2GO Review

Most of you have at the very least heard about TV tuner cards for your PC. They allow you to not only watch television on your PC, but also to record shows and movies and use time-shifting so you can pause live TV, in effect giving you a Tivo-esque experience. Today we'll be taking a look at Gainward's "portable" solution in this field.

In addition to their video cards and audio solutions like the one we are reviewing here, Gainward has now taken a step towards complete home entertainment via the PC with their new TV2GO USB2.0 Silicon TVR Tuner, which is part of the Hollywood@Home line of products.

    Gainward TV2GO Review

Some quick facts about the TV2GO:

    • Ultra Mini USB 2.0 TVR Tuner and MPEG recording and editing.
    • 125-channel cable ready TV receiver with multi-channel preview.
    • Full motion video recording, editing.
    • Editing and DVD/VCD burning.
    • View, stop, replay and record anytime with the “time-shifting”.
    • “ Snapshot ” captures still images from live TV or video playback.
    • Titling, audio tracks, background music, and 10 special effect filters.
    • 28-key card type Remote Control.
    • Video Source: TV, VCR, Camcorder.
    • Video Input: Coaxial, S-Video, Composite Video.
    • Video Recording Formats: DVD (720x480-NTSC).
    • SVCD (480x480-NTSC).
    • VCD (352x240-NTSC).
    • Frame-by-frame full rendering.
    • Group Of Picture (GOP) editing with fast Cut and Merge.
    • Smart Rendering.
    • GOP for MPEG files and "Key Frame" for AVI files.
    • Fast encoding only the edited parts, not the entire video.
    • Text/animated title overlay. Audio track and background music.
    • 10 special video effect filters (color filters, transition, merge, etc) Frame-by-frame full rendering.

Requires Windows XP/2000 and Windows Media Player 6.4 or higher.

The question is, even with all these features, can this ultra mini TVR tuner get the job done as well as the bigger, less portable, and sometimes less expensive tuner cards? Let's find out.
