Folding to Cure on the Edge with GPUs - Installation and Folding

First of all, before you move on I wholeheartedly suggest reading the "Folding@Home ATI GPU FAQ" over Stanford's website (link: here). It explains the whole installation process in a quite understandable way. Also, just for the sake of emphasis make sure you have the necessary software already installed before installing the client. The required software applications are the following: DirectX 9.0c and the correct version of Catalyst Drivers. Here's an excerpt from Stanford's ATI GPU FAQ:

    • "Catalyst driver version 6.5 [download from ATI or from a Stanford mirror]. Version 6.10 [see main ATI Folding@Home page or download driver from ATI] with the newest core appears to be working now (but requires more testing to be sure). Versions 6.6 and 6.7 will work, but at a major performance hit; 6.8 and 6.9 will not work at all. Due to all the complexities of support, we will support only versions 6.5, 6.10, and 6.11. Version 6.12 does not work correctly, but we are expecting that the 7.x series to solve that problem.
    • DirectX: 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904) or later, [download here], which yields d3dx9_30.dll (the critical part for FAH)"

    —Reference link: here.

The above programs are crucial because otherwise one may experience problems, like EUEs (early_unit_end) and therefore hurt your computer's folding overall output. So, take your time and configure your system correctly.

Now once you're ready, download the latest client file from Stanford's official website— here. I, of course, will suggest running the console client since GUIs tend to act as resource hogs and ultimately affect the folding processing power of your system a bit. But whichever you choose, just follow the instructions and install it.

The installation process is very similar to the old-school CPU-based client setups. If you aren't familiar with the process of setting up and configuring a F@H client then check out the user guides: "Console User Guide" and "Windows Graphical Client Installation."

Okay, now that you've installed your client successfully… it's up and running. In the next section we'll cover how to maximize its folding performance.
