nVidia GeForce FX 5200 vs. ATI Radeon 9200

     vs

    Comanche 4

Not exactly one of my favorite benchmarks, but here it is nonetheless.

Surprisingly, the R9200 beats the FX5200 by a few frames at both stock settings, and 2x AA and 8x AF. Do we trust results from 3DMark01 or Comanche4? Lets continue.

    AquaMark v2.3

As we all wait in anticipation for Massive Development's AquaMark3, here's a look at AquaMark v2.3.

Now these results are a bit more explainable, and almost confirm what we saw in 3DMark. At stock, the R9200 squeezes just a few frames faster than the FX5200, but when AA and AF are enabled, the R9200 is no match for the FX5200. I bet 10 bucks this trend continues.

    Code Creatures

I have never seen this benchmark run well on any system. Let's see how slow our budget cards really are. =)

Neither the FX5200 nor the R9200 are capable of running this benchmark and produce useful results. They simply don't have the raw horsepower to do so. This confirms my theory that because these cards are so weak, 128MB memory does not yield much of an advantage over 64MB.

    GLExcess

Our first OpenGL benchmark, this one runs a series of tests like 3DMark... but utilizes OpenGl!

These results basically mimic the 3DMark01 results. With AA and AF off, the FX5200 performs just a little bit better than the R9200, but when AA and AF are enabled, the FX5200 really brings the R9200 to its knees.

    SPECview Perf 7

This one's an OpenGL rendering benchmark for all you peeps in the professional workstation environment.

Well, both card's failed one test, which I can't really explain. But furthermore the 5200 absolutely destroys the 9200 in this app. There might be something wrong with the 9200 + SPECview, but most likely the 9200 just isn't cut out for any sort of workstation type activity. Neither cards are really but the 5200 does pull ahead.
