Chaintech SA6600G Video Card Review - FarCry, Halo
(Page 7 of 9 )
FarCry

FarCry was a fairly lenient game as far as letting the old R8500 play along decently. 1024x768 is a fairly decent resolution, certainly better than what Doom3 would let happen. To make this game really look how the developers envisioned it though, you need more horsepower. Enter the Chaintech 6600GT. At that same resolution, all of the internal details within FarCry could be shifted to "high" (but not "very high"), in addition to 4xAA and 8xAF. It could be played at 1280x1024 with nearly all of the toys and stay for the most part above the 30FPS threshold, but it simply didn't feel as silky smooth, nor did it look as good thanks to the detail settings being reduced to retain a somewhat playable frame rate. Sticking with 1024x768 seems to be more of the sweet spot.
Halo

Going for a ride along the beach in a Warthog? Not a good plan with the Raddy, because it's awfully difficult to tell what you are doing when you start hitting 10FPS at 800x600. Not to mention the fact that it looks awful at that resolution. The 6600GT makes this game look much better at 1024x768 with 4xAA and 8xAF enabled in the drivers. It did hit some rough patches and quickly drop below the 30FPS barrier, but I was so busy trying to not die that I didn't notice as much as someone who's actually good at this game would have.
