Installing a Video Card: A Memoir - Piece of Cake, Right?

The new card was lifted like the Crown Jewels from the box and carried gingerly to the workbench (or dining room table, as she calls it). It was now simply a matter of sliding the new card into the slot where the old one had been. Within thirty seven minutes the card clicked into place. What could have been simpler?

Maybe inserting peccary’s into a charging elephant’s bottom.

I recovered my composure, closed the wound and attached what I’ll simply call “the wires.” I pushed the button, and the machine started. Then it stopped. (This just spoiled the moment and smug look on my face.) I traced the wire known as the plug and found it was not seated right; some idiot had not plugged it in correctly. I will find out who is guilty and heads will roll. This time, the machine started without further incident, and I was treated to some magic, courtesy of the installation wizard. Amongst the crazy things this little bugg‘er wants is the disc that the manufacturers had thoughtfully included with the all drivers and gizmos on it. I guess I must I have left it in the box when I told the boy who lives in my house to put it out for collection with the rubbish. This was apparently a mistake. Luckily, I can work the Internet so, I ‘loaded them down’ as we techies say.

After a whole day limb deep inside my machine, akin to some vet with his arm up a cow, I completed the upgrade and wanted to see the results. One of the programs I use a lot has a frame per second counter (it counts the frames every second). The result of my day’s labour, £300, and ruining a perfectly good screwdriver, was an increase in FPS of five. Yes, five… BLOODY FIVE!!!!
