Olympus VN-480 Voice Recorder Review - Look and Feel
(Page 2 of 5 )
Packaging didn't really feature anything noteworthy except that the recorder wasn't bouncing around inside, which is of course a good thing but should also be expected.

Included in the package were the basics: two AAA batteries, a warranty card (not shown), three separate manuals for English, French, and Spanish, and obviously the VN-480 itself.

Aside from the included batteries, which makes this product ready to use right out of the box, the separate manuals are a nice touch. Though nothing spectacular, it's a lot more convenient than some manuals that choose to mix all three languages on the same page, listing step one of a process in English, then French, then Spanish, rinse and repeat. Some sort of case would have been nice, but you can't have everything I suppose.
The recorder's simple layout permits ease of use to be maintained along with a comprehensive feature set. On the left side you have the Hold switch.

With this switched on, none of the other buttons will work, so you can keep the recorder from accidentally turning on while in your pocket or briefcase. You can also see the metal pocket clip to the left of the hold switch. The other side simply features the volume dial.

I have placed an AAA battery in the picture for size comparisons; this thing really is quite small. It's also very light in weight, but not so light that it feels cheap (think a pack of cards as opposed to a pack of cigarettes).

The top of the unit has three important features: an earphone jack, a mic jack for optional corded microphones, and the built in microphone in the center. From my cursory testing the microphone seems to be quite sensitive; it records quite clearly in most situations.
