Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 160GB SATA Drive Review

    Benchmarks:

We've decided to benchmark this drive in the configuration that we figure most users will be using it in, via an onboard SATA controller.  In this case we're gonna use the Silicon Images controller which is onboard our ABIT NF7-S motherboard.

    Test System:

    • ABIT NF7-S Rev 1.2 Motherboard

    • AthlonXP 2600+ (333FSB) CPU

    • 512MB (2x256MB Sticks) Corsair PC3200 TWINX DDR

    • Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 160GB SATA Drive

    • Maxtor 30GB ATA100 7200RPM Hard Drive (For comparion)

    • Albatron GeForce4 Ti4200 Turbo 128MB Video card

    Comparison System:

    • ABIT KD7-RAID Motherboard

    • AthlonXP 2600+ (333FSB) CPU

    • 512MB (2x256MB Sticks) Corsair PC3200 TWINX DDR

    • Maxtor Ultra ATA133 60GB Hard Drive

    • Albatron GeForce4 Ti4200 Turbo 128MB Video card

We will use the most common hard drive benchmark utilities found today.  HDTach 2.61, ATTO Benchmark utility, SiSoft Sandra 2003 File Transfer benchmark, and PCMark 2002's hard drive scores.

    HDTach 2.61

    ATA100

    ATA133SATA ATA150

The results of the read speed of HDTach 2.61 is actually almost perfectly scaled for what we "should" be able to expect from speeds from these drives.

    ATTO Hard Drive Benchmark:

    ATA100

    ATA133SATA ATA150

Now the results here are a little suprising.  I've rerun these benchmarks several times (more than I care to remember!) and it simply appears that around 42,000 or so is the max read speed for this system.  The write speed escalates and continues to climb with the "better" performing drive, yet read remains solid.

SiSoft Sandra 2003 File Transfers Benchmark:

    ATA100

    ATA133SATA ATA150

Here we see the Maxtor DiamondMax 9 SATA drive continue to turn in impressive results.  For ANY single drive solution to be even remotely comparable to a RAID configuration is stellar.

Let's head to the 4th and final page of this review to look at the PCMark2002 hard drive benchmark scores and wrap this review up eh?
