    LiteOn LDW-851S DVD +/- R Review - Read Tests

Nero DVD Read Speed - Pressed Single Layer DVD

    LiteOn LDW 851S DVD +/- R Review

The single layer DVD read test looks pretty good with average read rate of 8.4x and maximum of 11.02. The 11.02x end read speed is just short of the drive's rated 12x. This isn't surprising. The single layer DVD was not completely full so the drive was unable to reach its maximum read speed. However, considering how quickly it got to 11x this is little doubt it would easy hit its maximum of 12x. The random seek time is almost identical to the drive's specifications at 95ms.

Nero DVD Read Speed - Pressed Double Layer DVD

    LiteOn LDW 851S DVD +/- R Review

Double layer disks typically have a slower transfer rate. Part of the problem is the movie industry's insistence to have a cap on DVD-Video read speeds to make DVD ripping a little harder; the other part is the difficulty of reading a double layer disk. The LDW-851S does show strong transfer rates with an average of 6.43x and maximum of just over 8x. Random seek time goes up a bit of the single layer DVD to 102ms.

Nero DVD Read Speed - Burnt Single Layer DVD+R

    LiteOn LDW 851S DVD +/- R Review

As with many DVD writers, the read capability has been capped at 6x. Notice that Nero is recognizing this disk as a DVD-ROM (in the lower right corner). This is due to a feature of some LiteOn drives that allows you to set the book-type of a DVD+R or DVD+RW to DVD-ROM for greater compatibility.

    Without book type set.

Nero DVD Read Speed - Burnt Single Layer DVD-RW

    LiteOn LDW 851S DVD +/- R Review

Again, the read capability has been capped at 6x. The CPU usage remains at only 1%, unlike other optical drives, where CPU usage goes up when reading RW media.

Nero CD Speed - Data pressed CD

    LiteOn LDW 851S DVD +/- R Review

Smooth 40x read. The little variations in the slope are caused by the copy protection of the data CD used.

Nero CD Speed - Audio Pressed CD

    LiteOn LDW 851S DVD +/- R Review

40x read of an audio CD is great! Audio CD transfer rates of older drives are typically half that of data CDs.

Nero CD Speed - Burnt CD-R

    LiteOn LDW 851S DVD +/- R Review

The read speed of the LiteOn LDW-851S remains constant even with a burnt CD-R. CPU usage even remained the same as the data CD used above. The only reason the LDW-851S didn't reach its maximum transfer rate of 40x was due to the disk not being completely full.
