LiteOn Dual-Layer DVD RW SOHW-1693S Review - Conclusion
(Page 6 of 6 )
Conclusion
This LiteOn drive is extremely fast. It certainly gives the user maximum burning capability and great burn quality. The software bundled with the drive can prevent the user from burning dual layer discs. An update gives you the latest version of Nero which has even more features packed into it, perfect for a drive which enables burning all of the current writing formats.
LiteOn has recently released a drive capable of burning at faster dual layer rates, at 8x. This drive is also at the same price point of $40. Although the availability of 8x dual-layer media may be an issue, as I couldn’t locally find 4x media. I’m sure in a few months there should be higher speed dual layer discs in most areas
Pros
- Extremely Fast Recorder
- Compact design is great for small desktops, and shuttle computers
- Dual Layer allows the user to save up to 8.3GB per DVD
- Drive allows burning at higher speeds than media rated, and beyond drives listed speed
- Includes front Bezel to match your systems over.
- Price $40 for an amazing drive.
Cons
- Drive can get extremely loud
- Bundled Software doesn’t support Dual Layer (must download updates)
- No extra IDE cable
Since I am familiar with DVD burners, I am certain that this drive is an amazing deal. In my tests the drive has been recording faster than what LiteOn had listed compatible of. Of course this is to prevent false advertising if the drive had not performed within listed speeds. But still with proper media, you should be able to achieve maximum burn speeds with these drives. Although it can get extremely loud when operating at full speed it would be hard to find a drive this fast without being this loud.
I’d like to thank everyone for reading this article about the LiteOn 1693S DVD RW/DL drive.
