The interior of the hard drive is quite a marvel of engineering and something that hasn’t changed much since its earliest inception. While speeds and capacities and interface have changed dramatically since it was first designed, the actual function and design of the drive has changed very little.
The next step before I started modding was to remove the logic board that controls the movement of the internal parts and controls the movement data into and out of the drive. While it wasn’t particularly necessary for me to do this, I did it to protect the surface of the logic board from particles and other materials on my work surface. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

With the logic board removed and its screws tucked safely away into the same drawer as the cover’s I set to work.
