Freecom Media Player 450 WLAN - Specification and features

The 450’s specs and features list is impressive:

    • Up to 1TB storage (smaller models are available with capacities of 250 and 500GB, as well as a hard drive-free streamer-only model.)

    • WLAN (54Mbps) and Ethernet (10/100) connections

    • Streams AV files from any PC on a network to a TV or Hi-Fi

    • Functions as an FTP network drive

    • Full remote control

    • Works directly on the TV/Hi-Fi – no PC required

    • Built-in Internet radio capability

    • USB host port built in (allows media playback from an additional USB storage device e.g. memory stick, external MP3 player)

    • Full range of digital and analogue A/V outputs, including: HDMI, HD component, S-video, Composite video, Stereo analogue audio, Digital coaxial and Optical

    • No cooling fan, for silent operation

Certain of these features stand out immediately. To begin with, the twin network connections offer serious flexibility in how the 450 can be used. This welcome move shows that Freecom clearly understands not only that some people don’t actually have a wireless LAN in their homes, but that cables are faster, more reliable, and less vulnerable to interference. The last thing you need on a good night in is for the WLAN to glitch at the critical moment, leaving you wondering whether the hero escaped or the girl-next-door got the guy (delete as appropriate).
