    AOpen DUW1608/ARR 16x DVD+/- R/RW Review - Write Tests

    Burn DVD+R

    AOpen 16x DVD +/- R/RW +DL

Even though the AOpen DUW1608/ARR claims a 16X DVD+R write speed, the fastest the drive would let me burn was 12X.  I don't believe the media was the problem, since another 16X drive I use recognized it as 16X media. 12X isn't bad, but it is unfortunate the DUW1608/ARR doesn't recognize more 16X media. Hopefully AOpen will correct this in a future firmware update.

Although the DUW1608/ARR had to burn this media at a slower than rated speed it did it very well. The image above is one of the clearer DVD writes I've seen. At no point does it go over 280 PI errors (the max was 55) or go over 4 PI failures (max was 4).

    Burn DVD-R

    AOpen 16x DVD +/- R/RW +DL

As noted in the specifications the fastest write speed for DVD-R with the DUW1608/ARR is 8X. The drive had no problems defaulting to this speed.

There is no way to say this nicely: this is a horrible burn.  Unfortunately, it wasn't a one time glitch, either. Several discs were burned with similar results. The PI Errors are well over the 280 maximum (557) and Pi Failures maximum was 13, significantly higher than the up to 4 that are allowed. These discs would not play on any of my set top DVD players without significant skipping.

    Burn DVD+DL

    AOpen 16x DVD +/- R/RW +DL

The DUW1608/ARR burns double layer media at 2.4X. The burn of a nearly full double layer toke 40 minutes and 41 seconds. The drive recognized the double layer media without problems.

Clearly from the Disc Quality scan double layer burning is a mixed bag with this drive. Layer 1 burned flawlessly staying well below the DVD standards. Layer 2 didn't fair nearly as well. Pi Errors maxed out at 675 and stayed at 280 or above for most of the second layer. PI Failures weren't as bad. There were a few peaks maxing out around 12 but they mostly stayed under 4. This disc could play in one of my set top DVD players but not my second one. At this point playback is very reliant on the quality of the error correction in the set top player.
