AOpen DUW1608/ARR 16x DVD+/- R/RW Review - Protection From Disc Breakage
(Page 4 of 7 )
Causes of disc breakage include:
- Poor disc quality, which may be caused by manufacturers cutting costs during production;
- Aging discs or cracks may lead to its disintegration during high-speed running.
AOpen’s optical drive products possess the following 3 measures to protect the user from injury when the broken discs accidentally fly out:
- The disc and the optical drive lock up if it discovers cracks on the disc;
- The disc tray eject until the motor stops completely;
- The latch is designed to prevent disc breakage from accidentally flying out.
Live Update
AOpen has included a great utility for keeping the DUW1608/ARR's firmware up to date. The utility is simply called Live Update. This utility connects to AOpen's server to compare the firmware installed on the drive to the newest version on the server. If a newer exists you can download and install the firmware from within the utility.

Installation
Installation of the AOpen DUW1608/ARR, like most optical drives, was a breeze. The only thing to remember is the drive does require an ATA66 ribbon cable, not the ATA33 ribbon cable most slower burning optical drives use.

A slight added bonus is that the DUW1608/ARR is slightly smaller than some other optical drives. In this photo, the AOpen drive is the one on the bottom.
