WinTasks Pro 5 Review - Conclusions
LIUtilies WinTasks Pro 5 is an enhanced process manager that can give a lot of insight into the internals of the system. Because its process library contains information on many Windows system tasks, its easy to tell which ones Windows is dependent on in order to maintain basic functionality. It has a streamlined interface that is not aimed at novices, but then neither is WinTasks Pro. The interface is designed to try to give as much information as possible without overloading the screen.
WinTasks Pro can be a boon to programmers. Its scripting and logging features are handy and can be extremely useful to track down problems in multithreaded and multiprocess programming environments. I don't know of any other process manager that has these abilities.
However, it is marketed as a tool to combat adware and spyware. While it has the ability to prevent processes from running, it falls way short in terms of detection. I can't recommend it above a good firewall, antivirus, and AdAware/Spybot Search and Destroy combination, but it can work well with them. It also can't detect a lot of spyware because it focuses on processes.
Highs
- Nice interface
- Scripting and logs are handy
- Helps with identifying system processes
Lows
- Detection of spyware and adware is seriously lacking
- Some buttons don't provide feedback
- Process Library is thin
WinTasks Pro 5 can be purchased from LIUtilities (http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/) for $49.95 for a downloaded copy and $59.95 for a physical copy.
