Smartphone App iZup Helps Make the Roads Safer - iZup: Performance

Using the iZup application is very easy, though it does require a smartphone as mentioned previously. After downloading the app, the ingenious software should hold the userís phone hostage. At the most, it will allow the user to call pre-authorized numbers. As we all know, smartphones have a wide range of capabilities these days; they can do everything from act as MP3 players to computers. When using any of a phoneís features while driving, the driver is putting both themselves and those around them at risk.

Thankfully, iZup has considered this. The app will not only prevent texts and incoming calls, but Internet use, access to the phonebook, and access to the phoneís music capabilities are all denied as well. All of these features will also be disabled if the phone carrier is seated in the passenger seat -- and no, this is not a mistake. Though the software used for the app is advanced, thereís still no way for the device to detect whether the person is sitting in the driverís or passengerís seat. This will obviously be problematic for some users, but there is a solution.

Teenagers using the app can have it disabled if they intend to be in the passenger seat for a long period of time, perhaps during a road trip or something similar. According to Illume Software, the account holder -- whoever that may be -- can temporarily disable the application by entering a pin code into the system's website from a computer. An adult using the app may need to grant their spouse or other trusted person access to their account to enter the pin, as they wonít be able to do it from their smartphone once the app is enabled.

The application is very successful at determining when the automobile exceeds five miles per hour, and will not take effect in any way before that specific speed. At five MPH on the dot, of course, it will shut down all communication. Not only will users not be able to make outgoing calls, but if attempting to push the talk button in anticipation of an unheard call, they will only hear music instead of a callerís voice.

Letís face it, most applications are pretty useless, designed more for fun and entertainment than anything else. iZup, on the other hand, is incredibly thoughtful, useful, and has the potential to save lives. Unfortunately, the application has a pretty big downfall: currently, itís only available for BlackBerries and phones that run on Windows Mobile or the new Android operating software.

Why is this a major downfall? A majority of teenagers donít have BlackBerries, as theyíre still seen as being targeted at business professionals and not the young crowd. Also, the operating systems that the app is available for are both very new, and thereís a chance that some teens in need of an app like this wonít be able to use it because of their currently technology -- or lack thereof -- as it pertains to their cellphone.

So, thatís the bad news. The good news is that the app is incredibly affordable and even comes with a family plan. A monthly subscription costs less than five bucks, though year-long subscriptions can be paid for in advance for the price of $49.95. As mentioned, there is an iZup family plan as well. The plan allows between three and five phones on a single account. Families can opt to pay for the service monthly at $9.95, though year-long subscriptions can be paid in advance for $79.95.
