All About Emulators: Re-Visiting the Ghost of Games Past - Popular Emulators
(Page 3 of 4 )
Because so many gaming sites offer so many different options, it's easy to feel overwhelmed. While there are many different emulator programs to choose from, there are a few which lead the pack in offering the best computer compatibility and true-to-the-original quality. Learn all about some of the more popular emulators out there.
Nintendo
BioNES
There's a whole wide world of Nintendo emulators to choose from out there, but BioNES is a solid choice for most systems. Even older systems without a great deal of RAM can run BioNES (a DOS-based program) with ease. This emulator, however, lacks any bells and whistles. BioNES does little more than allow you to play ROMs - but you may not need it to do much more. The BioNES emulator program only works with DOS.
RockNES
RockNES is designed to work with Macs. This program is freeware and takes up very little space on any system.
Super Nintendo
ZNES
ZNES works well with most versions of Windows, but it does require Microsoft DirectX 8.0 (or higher) to properly display your graphics. You can download DirectX for free at the Microsoft site.
Snes9x
This program, unlike many popular emulators out there, does not require DOS to run. This makes the Snes9x program very viable for Mac users. Snes9x works with other operating systems as well.
Nintendo 64
Project 64
Project 64 is absolutely the best emulator for Nintendo 64 ROMs, but this program has a long list of system requirements. It may be possible to run this program even if your computer doesn't quite meet the prerequisites, but it's not recommended. You'll find the sounds and graphics extremely sluggish if your PC isn't up to par for this emulator.
To use Project 64, you'll need to have at least 128 Mb of RAM and a Pentium III 600 MHz processor or better. You'll also need DirectX 6.0 or better. Project X will run on most versions of Windows. Mac users can't use Project 64, but will find that SixtyForce generally works well with Nintendo 64 ROMs on their systems.
