XG Duro 900 Power Supply Review - Testing

Now for the fun part, the testing.  As I mentioned early on in the review, this PSU boasts QUAD 12V rails.  I only thought it was fair to test each of these individually during these benchmarks.

    Test rig:

    • Biostar NF4ST-A9 Mainboard
    • AMD 64 3700+ cpu
    • 1 GB OCZ Premium Dual Channel Ram (2x512mb)
    • Sapphire X800 PCI-e Video Card (256mb)
    • Pioneer Dual Layer DVD+RW/-RW
    • 3x Maxtor 7400rpm 120GB IDE HD

    For idle conditions:

    • Booted and running Windows XP Pro
    • Sitting idle at desktop

    For load conditions:

    • Booted and running Windows XP Pro
    • Zipping files from DVD onto HD
    • Zipping files 2 HDs to each other
    • Listening to MP3s with Winamp
    • Playing Unreal Tournament

For each of these conditions, I tested the performance with my digital multimeter.  Here is how it performed:

As you can see, not only were the idle voltages very close to specs, they barely budged at all when the system was loaded down and working hard.  I found this very impressive, and re-ran the tests several times to be sure.  This PSU delivered the same results constantly.

One thing worth mentioning at this point, also, is the noise factor.  For a PSU of this size, I was quite pleased with how quiet the PSU is while running.  It is quiet enough that while it was on my workbench, I had to put my head around the back of the case in order to hear it.  Under my desk where it rests normally, I can not hear it at all.  It is actually much quieter than the stock 500W PSU that came with the case.
