    Ultra X-Connect 500W Modular PSU

Overall the Ultra X-Connect power supply has an even number of ups and downs. At just $99.99, the 500W power rating is plenty for any computer, but the cables are bulky and difficult to bend. Read on for specs, tests and photos.

    Introduction

Every electrical appliance requires a power supply. Many household components have their power supplies built in and hidden while others use a small breakout box that is visible to the eye (cell phone chargers, cable modems, etc.). Likewise, computers require power supplies and the quality and power of these PSUs (power supply unit) can vary tremendously from one to another, so much that it is responsible for the stability or instability of the computer.

Computer OEMs rigorously test the computers that they mass produce so they know precisely what power supplies are sufficient for their computers. For enthusiasts that like to upgrade or custom build their own boxes however, it is often hard to judge if a certain PSU will come back to haunt them with instability, and worse, damage other hardware. Ever wonder why some seemingly powerful 400W plus power supplies go for really cheap, under $30, or even free bundled with cases, while others cost over $100? The numbers, 350W, 400W, 500W, etc., do not tell the entire story as different PSU manufacturers make different PSUs and each brand certainly has a different level of quality. Therefore it is important to look at more than just a price tag and a wattage rating when seeking a power supply.

Ultra Products is a global, technology-solutions provider headquartered in Fletcher, Ohio. The products they produce vary from cables and cases to DDR memory and MP3 players. They seek to exceed "customer applications requirements." In other words, they want to impress you with their products, and go above and beyond the competition. Ultra's line of X-Connect power supplies aim to do just this with "breakthrough technology and design elements."

    Ultra X-Connect 500W Modular PSU

The X-Connect power supply features modular cable connections allowing you to choose which cables to connect. There are host of other features that I will cover as well, in today's review of the Ultra X-Connect 500W Modular PSU.
