Raidmax Volcano 630 Watt Power Supply

High quality power supplies should be a consideration for all your builds, since they can prevent many problems that stock PSUs may cause. Today’s review is of a nice Raidmax Volcano 630W PSU, which promises modular connectors and light effects.

Raidmax sells good looking cases, power supplies, and accessories for both OEM and retail markets, and they're known for coming up with some intriguing designs. The company has established a solid line of attractive gaming cases, and they have nice looking power supplies to make good looking cases even better.

Most system builders who think of modding their cases may not consider modding their power supplies, especially since touching the wrong part of an open PSU could be a very unpleasant experience. Raidmax has attractive pre-modded power supplies that look awesome without any of that work. Raidmax has a couple kinds of windows that they place on the units, and also glow with pretty blue lights.

The Raidmax Volcano comes in 530W and 630W varieties (the Raidmax RX-530 ATX12V EPS12V model and the Raidmax RX-630 ATX12V EPS12V model). We have the 630W version for demonstration here. Holding the package, it seems to pass the simplest power supply test: it’s heavy. Generally lighter PSUs are cheaper, but we don’t have to worry about that here.

It has a nice red and black package, looking like it’s ready to breathe fire. We’ll have to see if it lives up to the “Power of Silence” written on the box.

Here are the basic specs on its rails.

As I mentioned, it’s a modular power supply. That means you plug in only the connectors that you need. Since you probably don’t have a use for every single power connector that PSU manufacturers provide, modular design gets the clutter of extra connectors out of your case and opens everything for air to move better.

If you get excited about airflow cooling your parts, modular PSUs like this are definitely the way to go. This is especially nice for cases with windows, since clean insides just look better. This is also a great power unit for window cases since it includes blue lights in its fans and flame vents for the light to shine through.
